A high-ranking official at the Seattle Fire Department was found dead Sunday, concluding a nearly two-week-long search after he failed to return from a hunting trip in central Washington.

Seattle Deputy Fire Chief Jay Schreckengost, 56, was found dead in the mountains near Cliffdell in Kittitas County on Sunday evening, just about a half-mile from the spot where his pickup truck was parked on Nov. 2, the day he went hunting. There was no preliminary evidence of suspicious activity or foul play, according to the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office, which had led the massive search effort.

I didn’t see it.

Are you thinking of that balloon idea I mentioned?

My grandfather who had suffered a small stroke and cancer was killed chopping wood for a mountain children’s home and a limb fell on him.

I think he would have chosen something like that for leaving.

The best guess is he didn’t know what hit him.

A few hours after not hearing from him, a few people went out looking. A short search.

Thus sayeth Michael.SF. “A half mile from his truck?? They weren’t looking very hard for him.”

Here in NE Pennsylvania, search and rescue is volunteer. I have been on many searches for hunters with either volunteer fire or volunteer S&R.

Rather than argue the point that it is sometimes difficult to find a body in a dense forest and hilly woods, I would rather urge you to give your local search and rescue organization the gift of your experience and expertise in finding lost things. There is no such thing as having too many persons in a grid search especially one such as yourself with tons of experience.

Yes.

Their balloon was used to extract someone by a plane catching the line.

Thanks for the link. Wow, that thing is good for a week.

Amazing.

It’s also 150 feet instead of the 100 I suggested.

Appreciate you linking that in.

At $75.00, I still think that’s a great deal.

I remember those. I saw them demonstrated. It was pretty
cool, but I thought, “What a stress being scooped up at
zero to 100+ miles per hour.”

Great idea though.

I may have seen it on “The Big Picture”, a Sunday morning
show about the military.

He looked way too fat and out of shape to be going into the woods alone.

Or to be a Deputy Fire Chief for that matter.

Cheap life insurance for such a scenario.

I completely agree with you. We all have to die, and I have seen many die just as you describe. No thanks. Personally I would definitely want to go like this man from Seattle. In the woods, hunting with his dog.

” found dead... just about a half-mile from the spot where his pickup truck was parked”

” ...Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office, which had led the massive search effort.”

Two WEEKS of a MASSIVE search effort and he was only a half a mile from his vehicle?

Were they using a MASSIVE amount of BLIND volunteers?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In that area, a half-mile (as the crow flies) can easily be a 6-7 mile walk on the ground. The area is very rugged and overgrown.
Ever been there? I have.
Probably heart attack.
Although it could be an aneurysm.
Since he was a fire chief I would assume he would be in fair shape but you never know.
I personally knew 2 Police officers, both in their mid 50’s that died of heart attacks while elk hunting. Also there was another 50 year old man in my community that just died the same way just a few weeks ago
Was he fully jabbed? Check for a heart attack and spike clotted cardiac vessels.
Naw, I actually don’t care what you say or do but this is a conservative chit-chat board and when people post using language that the self serving liberals who think they know everything and are experts at doing a job they know nothing about, I tend to call them out on it.
Regardless have a fantastic day.
