Former President Trump says if he had not supported Virginia Republican Glenn Youngkin, the new governor-elect would have lost by a sizable margin in Tuesday's election.
"I've heard Virginia is blue, but I've never believed it was blue," Trump said during an interview on local radio in Virginia on Wednesday morning, according to Politico reporter Meridith McGraw. "Without MAGA he would have lost by 15 points, more ... instead of giving us credit they say, 'oh he's more popular than [Trump].'"
Youngkin defeated former Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) in Virginia's gubernatorial election, thanks largely to a boom in support from suburban voters and higher margins of victory in rural areas that Trump won during the 2020 presidential contest despite losing the state as a whole by 10 points.

Agreed. I love Trump’s policies, but he can definitely take a dose of humility.
Spot on... Why did he have to say anything except CONGRATULATIONS? He would endear the liberal voter on the fence and his base would grow, and we could MAGA.
Also, Mcawful was tone deaf. Half the time, I thought his commercials were endorsing Youngkin. McAwful outplayed himself.
Who would Trump pass the torch too in the GOP? Nobody will address in a Trumpian manner the elephant in the room: the fundamentally corrupt nature of all of our institutions.
DeSantis may be a mostly good governor (I’m not sure about this new Seminole sports betting monopoly) but he has shown exactly zero interest in engaging corrupt Republicans and removing their influence from the party. Most of all we need an opposition party to the progressive-corportist alliance and I’m not convinced DeSantis is the person to lead on that. He’s got a lot of mainline GOP on his resume and that is cause for concern.
Oh, let him gloat, I suppose. It’s equally as true that Youngkin won because Trump offered his endorsement and then largely stayed on the sidelines.
Youngkin ran a brilliant campaign, successfully retaining Trump’s MAGA base while bringing home the #NeverTrumpers and suburban swing voters who flipped to Biden.
President Trump - stay in your lane. Stop making it all about you...
Spot on. He just cannot help himself. Unlike Biden who blames everyone else for his screwups, Pres. Trump allows no one to share his spotlight. And yes without Trump Youngkin does lose, but that is because too many Trump supporters aow no deviation from Trump devotion.
Trump’s greatest contribution to Youngkin’s win was probably the army of poll watchers he recruited.
I wouldn't put much faith in that translation.
Trump has every right to claim victory in VA. He taught disgruntled voters to persist and fight back. He first exposed the evil of CRT. He said let’s go Brandon to elitist liberals looking down their noses on normal people.
Trump is a very good influence on America. Too bad the 2020 election was stolen from him. We’d all be a lot better off today.
In my book MAGA is third on the list of reasons Youngkin won:
First, and foremost, McAuliffe ran an absolutely terrible campaign. He wrecked himself, on multiple occasions. Second, Youngkin ran a good campaign, and avoided any self-inflicted wounds. He essentially was a good quarterback, not a great one, who won the game with solid play and no turnovers. And last, the MAGA folks delivered.
Trump should simply recognize Youngkin’s victory as his and his alone, and congratulate him for running a successful campaign. A humble approach would better serve President Trump, especially if he really has future ambitions.
Part of me thinks Trump is jabbing him because he wouldn’t campaign with him. I absolutely love President Trump, but sometimes he makes me shake my head with disapproval.
a proud 2016 donor to Jeb! Bush sounds more RINOish and less Trumpish to me...
Actually, it does matter what a politician sounds like. OBungo's "soaring oratory" was a great part of his image. JoeBungo's mangled speech, with the creepy whispering, was kept under wraps during the campaign, hence the hiding in his basement. Obviously, the horrendous performance of his administration in all quarters is having a huge impact too, but he doesn't have the capability to project the soothing, avuncular image that would be able to mitigate some of it. It's all out in the open now, with predictable results.
Don't get it twisted, here's the REAL meaning of yesterday's results. Youngkin won because more Virginians have been able to realize that A. The Trump agenda is the right path for Virginia and America and B. More Virginians have experienced in the last 10 months the consequences of the FOUL AGENDA that Dems have implemented with more to come, thanks to the corrupt Biden regime.
McAwful was all Trump, Trump, Trump. . .he had Obama down here all Trump, Trump, Trump. . he even got sleepy Joe down here going Trump, Trump, Trump. . ha ha. . how did that work out for you Dems?. . .DON'T GET IT TWISTED, RINOS AND BUSH-BOTS (including a few Freepers)!!
I don't look gift horses in the mouth.
“Trump is a super successful commercial real estate developer. If you’ve ever dealt with real estate developers, their egos are supernatural. Just sayin’. Love his policies and most of his philosophy, but man, that ego.”
I’m a (retired) residential real estate developer and I understand his attitude completely. It’s why I liked him right away. His detractors remind me of people who thought Rush Limbaugh’s attitude was too egotistical because they just didn’t “get” him and how he played the game.
Believe nothing, The Hill.
It seems like Youngkin thinks it is “wise” to avoid standing too close to Trump. Maybe that is NOT because Trump is toxic.
Perhaps the governor-elect wants to forestall any side by side comparisons that make him seem less original.
Youngkin’s speech was a Trump speech
Trump blazed a trail.
If President Trump is stepping on his dick like you say he is it is because it is big.
President Trump won the presidency on his first political campaign, against the entire establishment and both political parties. The entire Republican leadership tried to sabotage him from day one.. Trump recieved nearly zero endorsements from major newspapers. Nobody has ever done that before.
Trump had a horrible time implementing his policies because the entire machinery of the bureaucracy of government turned against him thanks to the Uniparty.
I have a question for you. What do McConnell's balls taste like?
So be it, but the way it looks this morning Youngkin made the right decisions.
McAuliffe completely blew it by saying parents shouldn’t tell schools what to teach. What a dumb thing to say out loud.
Then this boy in a skirt rapes two girls in the girls’ bathroom - and the Democrats demonize parents for getting angry about it at school board meetings. Dumb Dumb Dumb.
Trump and his MAGA posse saw blood in the water and showed Youngkin the roadmap to victory.
Youngkin was smart enough to capitalize on it - but there’s no doubt in my mind this was Trump and MAGA all the way.
