Doubting if I’m better informed, but I took the bait.
Most EVs include an adaptor for charging at what is called “Level 1”, 120 VAC typical wall receptacle.
BUT IT IS SLOW! Charge all night and maybe enough for 50 miles.
Level 2 charger would plug into the same receptacle as an electric stover or dryer. Charge all night and perhaps 500 plus miles.
Level 3 is the commercial Tesla chargers and possibly 20 miles in one minute of charging.
Many variables, current available(amps), is the battery near full or empty, the temperature of the battery...

I’m guessing they got a HUGE break on the cost. Even if Tesla made $1 on each one...it’s the numbers that act as “advertising”.

What a great subject for a new “ruined vacation” reality series on the Travel Channel-”A Car Ruined My Vacation”-Teslas stalled with occupants getting robbed and assaulted on remote roads and tourist sites, sketchy neighborhoods, etc-sounds like a lot of fun...

That's definitely an issue, especially at times when travel is heavy like holidays.
The time to charge leads to long lines.

THis is the loudest laugh in the universe...OMG this is going to put them out of business!

Wow. Thanks for that treasure trove of details I had never heard before.
So big battery recharge partially depends upon 5 below zero here in Michigan in the winter and 105 degrees in several places during the summer this year.
And I would guess that Tesla deluxe charger is pricey. Just a hunch.
Gomer Pyle: “Golly, sir. I can’t really help you all the way out here with a gallon of gas or a jump. All I can do now is tow your car back to Wally’s Filling Station and you can plug in for a few hours. You’re welcome to stay in Mayberry overnight. If it’s a tougher mechanical or electrical thing the nearest Tesla dealer is up in Mount Pilot.”

Who would want to RENT an electric vehicle? Sounds like a great way to wreck a vacation!
Businessmen staying in the city and not wanting to hunt for a gas station on the way to the airport to return a rental car. Be sure that Hertz did the homework on this. Vacationers can choose from the other 80%.

Many of our local WaWa’s have Tesla chargers now and yes there are a lot of Tesla’s around here. I would not want to take one on a long trip but for local/regional travel they are pretty damn good cars, 0 to 60 in 3 seconds.

On the other hand, as long as you don't have to run A/C, the Tesla will do better fuel wise in huge traffic jams. No idling.

I think everybody who wants a Tesla should buy one. One of my friends has two Teslas (an S and a 3) and a Volt.
I’m not crazy about subsidizing them though.

Hertz clearly cannot foresee all the dead EVs that renters leave abandoned on Interstates and country roads nationwide.
To: Oldeconomybuyer
That’s roughly a $7.5 billion dollar deal.

You don't do this logic thing, do you? Here is a math problem.
You are in your little buzz-mobile, at night, in a traffic jam, in the snow, with the heater, the wipers, the defroster going, and you are trying to charge your phone.
How far will you have to walk, and how much will you have to pay Hertz for the tow?

So... The engineer in me asks. Where will a parking lot have enough power for 100 480v charging stations??? It will probably be like the charging stations that run on a diesel generator.
BUT!!! Not to worry. The taxpayers will pick up the tab

Hertz also ordered 20,000 flat bed diesel powered tow trucks. /sarc

Gas cars were 100% rented and gone.
This is the nightmare scenario that could get very common, particularly in heavy travel seasons like summer.
They are probably going to have to heavily discount the rental fees on electric cars to match supply and demand.
