Unplugged? California lawmakers send Newsom bill that could ban gas generators

Legislation to restrict the use of gas-powered landscaping equipment in California also would outlaw portable generators in a state only a year removed from rolling power outages amid deadly heat.

Should Newsom sign the bill, which cleared the California State Legislature on Thursday, it could ban another gas-powered necessity: portable generators.

The Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association warned AB 1346 could lead to a ban on the sale of portable generators in California as soon as 2024.

“No matter how well-intentioned this bill might be, it makes a critical error in equating portable generators with other small off-road engine equipment,” said Joseph Harding, technical director of PGMA.

The final amendment of the legislation asks the California Air Resources Board to consider the feasibility of a generator or emergency response phaseout based on the availability of zero-emission options but puts no restriction on banning the machines. A legislative analysis of the bill said generators were the highest source of pollution from SOREs in California.

California has also determined that wood fires are carcinogenic. I don’t think they’ve banned them but probably regulated fireplaces.

California is the bellwether for the entire nation, given it’s size. and the derangement of the left.

It only applies to portable generators. Medical facilities and government buildings will not be affected. Just private ownership for stiffs like us. No generators for your home, motorhome, camping, picnics, etc.

“Progressive”, my ass. Liberals won’t stop until everyone lives in a cave and is eating rocks and twigs. Time to get rid of the liberals.

Very sad! Only question I have is...when will all power plants be outlawed? Most of them are already!

The bastards really do want to freeze in the dark? Maybe that’s why egg-toss lady was wearing a guerilla mask. California is becoming the Planet of the Apes, and pretty soon someone will be hosing down Charlton Heston while he screams “This is a madhouse! A MADHOUSE!” Larry Elders is wasting his abilities trying to save the Bizzaro State. They don’t want saving.

Maybe someday in the future there will be options, but right now, and extended outage The only full proof method for reliable back up power is generators running off some petroleum product, whether gasoline diesel natural gas, etc.

Batteries have their place for short term power, Usually limited to a few hours at best, but in a long-term outage you want something that can reliably run for hours, if not days and be quickly refueled. Right now, batteries do not have that capability to be recharged and last required time frames for things like hospitals, Waste water treatmentstations, etc.

Didn’t even think of that. Electric and battery powered one equipment does exist, but from my experience using it it is best for small home use to trim your own hedges, leaf blow your own yard, etc. The time it takes to recharge is not suitable for a contractor going from house to house.

If you have a larger property, say a half acre to an acre or more, you really need to have gas powered equipment for the bulk of yardwork which can be substituted with a few electric products for smaller tasks.

The problem is, the majority of Californians are so dense, they’ll continue to support this dictatorial, power-drunk a-hole at the cost of total oppression of free choice and thought. They’ve been operantly conditioned to think that any dissent from the current party line will deliver an electric shock, not a food pellet. As much as I’d like to see Larry Elder win, I won’t be surprised if I wake up Wednesday to find that Gruesome was given a new mandate to continue as a poster boy Chairman Mao with pearly whites.

People will die...

If it's legal to kill the 'not-yet-breathing' human; what's the problem with letting the breathing ones die?

This kind of crap is why Larry Elder needs to become governor tomorrow.
