More than 100 House Democrats are backing legislation introduced Friday that would lower Medicare eligibility to age 60, down from 65.
The Improving Medicare Coverage Act was co-sponsored by at least 125 Democrats, led by Reps. Pramila Jayapal (Wash.), Conor Lamb (Pa.), Joe Neguse (Colo.), Susan Wild (Pa.), Haley Stevens (Mich.) and Debbie Dingell (Mich.).
Jayapal said the legislation would expand coverage to an additional 23 million people.
"Lowering the Medicare eligibility age will not only be life-changing for at least 23 million people, it will also be life-saving for so many across America who will finally be able to get the care they need and deserve," Jayapal, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said in a statement.
Democrats are aiming to include the provisions of the bill in the $3.5 trillion reconciliation package focused on "human infrastructure." They also want that legislation to expand Medicare coverage to hearing, vision and dental care.
"We are the only industrialized nation that does not have guaranteed access to health care for all its citizens - this needs to change now," Dingell said in a statement. "We're working on ensuring universal health care, and this includes lowering the Medicare eligibility age to 60 so that more adults can get the critical access to the quality, affordable health care they need."
But lowering Medicare eligibility, as well as the price tag of the broader package, is encountering resistance from Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who recently urged fellow Democrats to "hit pause" on the $3.5 trillion measure.
Congressional committees are aiming to finish drafting their portions of the budget reconciliation package by Sept. 15.
Do the Gop need any more ammo for the Midterms .
The Commie wet dream!
Make Medicare Go Broke Quicker Act.
drip...drip...drip....
“Eligibility” means coercion via penalties.
“We are the only industrialized nation that does not have guaranteed access to health care for all its citizens” -— I have repeatedly gone to hospitals, and received top-notch treatment, whether I had insurance or not.
My thoughts exactly! Since we are being taken by our overloads and deep state, this is a reality. It will happen.
““We are the only industrialized nation that does not have guaranteed access to health care for all its citizens””
False. The PRC (Yes, China) abolished socialized medicine in 1989. You have to have private insurance there.
Money is like Obamas ego! Infinite!!
Since my wife and I just turned 60, it would be nice so we could retire to our farm, but that is a huge increase to Medicare.
EVERYONE in this country, whether a citizen or not, MUST be given medical care if needed. I often tell people that if someone is drunk at three in the morning and tries to put their car through a telephone pole they will get the best care in the world by EMT’s and Emergency Room professionals whether they have insurance or not. EVERYONE has health care in this country. Not everyone has health insurance. If you don’t have much money you probably qualify for Medicaid. If you have the money for insurance and don’t get it then you work it out on how to pay for treatment. Some people rather have a new car with a big monthly payment than a monthly payment for health insurance.
Thanks, NO!
Reduce Medicare eligibility to 60.
The rest of the deal is everyone agrees to die at 75. They’ll keep that part quiet.
Of course you still get to vote until you’re 120.
If they get that then they will push for 50 and ultimately they will try to lower it to birth. They are trying to sneak in socialized medicine.
The same Evil 100 pray to Satan.
Not surprised .
Medicare is already going broke.
Life changing is a good description, but people will get screwed over on prescription costs.
I HATE Medicare.
This was reported a few days ago
“ Social Security Trust Fund will be emptied in 13 years, when today’s 54-year-olds reach full retirement age. That is one year earlier than forecast in their previous report.
At that point, benefits - paid for solely by current payroll taxes with no Trust Fund - will have to be cut by 26 percent for all current and future recipients to keep the Fund solvent. Or, to keep benefits at the currently mandated level, social security payroll taxes would have to rise by 27 percent immediately, from next year onwards,
The Hospital Insurance Trust Fund is forecast to be exhausted in just five years. American seniors will have their hospital benefits cut by 16 percent starting in 2026. To maintain currently mandated benefits, the Trustees say a 27 percent increase in Medicare payroll taxes on all working Americans is needed.
They need to go back to the old antitrust laws that said you couldn’t price the same service or product differently to different people.
An uninsured person can currently be charged many times more what an insured person is charged. And that is wrong.
