Oregon school shooter, now 38, says he feels 'tremendous shame and guilt'

Kip Kinkel, who killed his parents before going on a shooting rampage at his Oregon high school in 1998, killing two classmates and injuring 25 more, has given his first news interview, telling HuffPost he feels "tremendous, tremendous shame and guilt."

Kinkel, now 38, is serving a de facto life sentence at the Oregon State Correctional Institution. He spoke with the news site by phone for about 20 hours over 10 months.

He said he felt guilty not just for what he did as a 15-year-old suffering from then-undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia, but the effect his crime has had on other juvenile offenders sentenced to life terms: His case has been held up by some of his victims and by others as a reason to oppose juvenile justice reform in the state.

He isn't the poster boy for life sentences so stop with the attention grab.

Everyone is responsible for their own behaviors. If you do the crime, at whatever age, you should do the time. Kippy doesn't get your face time.

Gee - I would hope that he would feel guilt for his actions.

That’s not the point. What do we do with lifers? It makes leftists feel good that they’re not associated with death - but turning a prisoner into an effective slave of the state is better? Exile to an island?

He should be feeling nothing. He should be dead.

He’s hoping his remorse will get him a parole date.

Glad he’s feeling remorse. I’ll leave the decision of whether his soul should be redeemed to Him, the Almighty. I’m not qualified to do so.

“ suffering from then-undiagnosed paranoid schizophrenia,”

He should just claim to be a woman. Then all his psychosis would magically disappear.

This was the boy who was yelling to the police “KILL ME! KILL ME!” when arrested.

Robert Heinlein made an excellent point about that in Starship Troopers, when one of the characters has to witness the execution of a military deserter who kidnapped, held for ransom, neglected and then murdered a child, all of which were capital crimes in that setting:

“This Dillinger—he looked like anybody else, and his behavior and record couldn’t have been too odd or he would never have reached Camp Currie in the first place. I suppose he was one of those pathological personalities you read about—no way to spot them.

Well, if there was no way to keep it from happening once, there was only one sure way to keep it from happening twice. Which we had used.

If Dillinger had understood what he was doing (which seemed incredible) then he got what was coming to him…except that it seemed a shame that he hadn’t suffered as much as had little Barbara Anne—he practically hadn’t suffered at all.
But suppose, as seemed more likely, that he was so crazy that he had never been aware that he was doing anything wrong? What then?

Well, we shoot mad dogs, don’t we?

Yes, but being crazy that way is a sickness—

I couldn’t see but two possibilities. Either he couldn’t be made well—in which case he was better dead for his own sake and for the safety of others—or he could be treated and made sane. In which case (it seemed to me) if he ever became sane enough for civilized society…and thought over what he had done while he was “sick”—what could be left for him but suicide? How could he *live* with himself?

And suppose he escaped *before* he was cured and did the same thing again? And maybe *again?* How do you explain *that* to bereaved parents? In view of his record?

I couldn’t see but one answer.”

Heinlein was, I suspect, correct.

He’s where he deserves to be.
In another time, say just a couple decades earlier, he’d have been in the ground.

Well maybe Kate will feel some compassion and let him loose. Especially with the threat of the Mexican variant. Or is it the Indian variant? Or the Guatamanian variant? Or the Patagonian variant? Hard to keep up these days. New day, mengele jr announces a new variant. That ever changing covid huh?

One thing is for certain. Kip has NOT killed anyone since he’s been in prison.

Unlike the THOUSANDS of other psycho killers who have been released and have gone on to kill again.

I love Starship Troopers.
What they did to the book in the abomination of a movie was criminal.

They did it a bit better in the CGI animated series. Starship Troopers: Roughneck Chronicles. They didn’t get to finish it because they ran out of money.

He’d already been subdued by classmates(NRA members) when the police arrived. They may have spoiled his plans for suicide. .
