Vice President Kamala Harris made her first foreign visit to Guatemala and Mexico this week to address the "root causes" of Central American migration to the United States. But, ignoring the intimate role the United States played in developing those root causes, she brusquely told desperate Guatemalans "do not come" to the U.S. and dismissed any controversy over her not visiting America's southern border by saying she hadn’t been to Europe yet either.
Thus, the daughter of immigrants and the first woman of color to serve as vice president of the United States left zero doubt that she was not the new hope Central Americans had wished she would be.
Harris delivered this “new era” immigration language — which goes against asylum law and President Joe Biden’s promise to both restore the asylum-processing system at our border and bring about long-overdue immigration reform — with as much compassion as the "I really don’t care. Do U?" jacket that former first lady Melania Trump wore on her ride to visit migrant children in a detention camp.
While decades of poverty, corruption, war and dictatorship — an inevitable result of Washington’s at-the-barrel-of-a-gun interference in regional politics — would make any visit by a member of a new Democratic administration something of a poison chalice, there is still a lot of history there for which the U.S. should apologize. Harris, however, went in ignoring all of it and didn’t cover herself in glory even touching on the problems of today.

Like building a prosperous nation based on hard work, industry, thrift, delayed gratification, separation of church and state...good old American traits. By being incredibly successful, we are creating "root causes" for people to want to invade the USA.
Hmmmmm, she never seems to ask why these nations continue to make poor choices when evidence of how to make good choices is easily at hand.
Ah yes, NBC. Had we not been around, that region would have benefitted from the benevolent rule of those wonderful progressive colonization oriented countries such as Spain, etc. We know how that went. Not defending things as they occurred, but I’m quite sick of the left’s “things are always bad because of (fill in the blank)” attitude without ever coming up with an idea that would actually work (in any time frame throughout history).

Anyone with half a brain who lives in one of those crapholes would have to be an absolute fool if they did not wish to migrate to the United States and live here. Despite purported racism, the fact is that non whites wherever they are from, wish to live among whites and migrate toward them.
Sure, the US should institute Western Civilization ilo Socialism and make everybody learn and use English in the New American Colonies.

I don’t have any guilt, at all. This is what happens to countries where the population are uneducated and defenseless. Maybe NBC should give them some money. Don’t blame the giggle Queen either. NBC helped get her elected.
The “root cause” of Latin American problems is a culture that lionizes criminals and thugs.
Translation: Not enough handouts.
I’ll give the author credit for speaking the truth — Harris knows nothing about Latin America and cares even less. I’ll also stipulate that historically US relations with Latin America have been patriarchal and exploitative. Currently our collective demand for dope helps fuel corruption in Latin America and destroy lives and society in the US, while creating a massive transfer of wealth to Latin America.
I seriously doubt that the author’s slanted impression of Ms Harris trip - what it said - is anything more than the author’s misbegotten opinion; and certainly an opinion, I believe, shared by Ms Harris in terms of her own thinking (no doubt she too believes we are “guilty”).
However, that should be the U.S. signal - you folks need to clean up your own act.
