Just In: Trump Fails to Crack 50 Percent in New 2024 GOP Primary Poll

In a new Politico/Morning Consult poll, respondents who plan to vote in the GOP primary were asked “If the 2024 Republican primary were being held today, for whom would you vote?”

Trump more than tripled his nearest competitor with 48 percent to former Vice President Mike Pence’s 13 percent, while Pence nearly doubled third-place finisher Donald Trump Jr.’s 7 percent. Senators Mitt Romney and Ted Cruz were tied with former Amb. Nikki Haley at 4 percent.

South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, who delivered the GOP response to President Joe Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress last month, drummed up just two percent, besting Sen. Marco Rubio and Gov. Kristi Noem at 1 percent.

Bringing up the rear were Sen. Josh Hawley with 2 … respondents, not percentage points. Gov. Larry Hogan and Sen. Rick Scott each had one supporter in the poll.

That is true. Odd that Governor Desantis was left out.

Oh for Pete’s sake.

Trump is the GOP now. If for some reason, he does not run next time, I think Pompeo will run (and win)

You missed the part where Trump couldn’t be bought off or bribed like the rest.

what POLITICO wanted to see

----------------

I don't know about that. Maybe that's what Mediaite wanted us to believe about the poll. But here is another opinion...

GOP voters apparently only want Trump as president

https://www.mic.com/p/gop-voters-apparently-only-want-trump-as-president-79276496

none of the other high profile Republicans even cracked 15%. In fact, the next most popular potential GOP candidate is former Vice President Mike Pence, a man whose obsequiousness to Trump only delivered a lynch mob and a disavowal from his former boss. According to the poll, Pence has just a 13% share of GOP voter support.

Incredibly, everyone else listed in the poll scored dramatically worse than Pence. The third highest theoretical candidate, Donald Trump Jr., scored just 8%, which is better than Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who landed at 7%. From there on out it's 4% and lower for everyone from Nikki Haley, to Marco Rubio, to South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem. To add insult to injury, when presented with the list of potential 2024 GOP candidates, 4% of respondents said they simply wouldn't vote at all, which has to be painful for someone like Mike Pompeo, who landed at a paltry 1% of support.

(bolded for the Mike Pompeo backers on here)

If there's a grand takeaway from this poll, conducted between May 14-17 with 652 GOP respondents, it's that the Republican party is both locked into backing the former president by an overwhelming margin, and that — without Trump sucking up all the political oxygen — 2024 is wide open for anyone to seize upon. Absent Trump, there is simply no clear GOP frontrunner or figurehead.

I won’t argue your conclusion. However, there should be a big gigantic BUT at the end of it.

But, if Trump chooses to endorse and campaign for a candidate, that person will secure the nomination easily.

In fact, I would bet that a ringing endorsement by Trump of anyone in the middle tier of that list might be enough if they are MAGA and not an idiot.

The Don and Don Jr. took 58% in a liberal hackjob poll. Yeah, I would say he has a majority.

That’s the author of that article’s conclusion.

Anyone who has heard the last 3 Trump interivews knows Trump is *NOT* just going to endorse somebody else. So forget about it.

No. Noem vetoed a bill banning biological males from competing in women sports. She’s dead, Jim.

Yeah right. She wouldn’t even stand up against men wearing purses.

They left out DeSantis because he would have polled above Pence.

100 times out of 100.

I wouldn’t waste a vote on Pence. He brings nothing.

Over 70% of those polled picked a “MAGA candidate”. And that’s in a politico poll. That’s a pretty solid indication of where the heart of the GOP is at, and it ain’t with the Romney’s, Cheney’s and Rubios. Unfortunately, the money is still with the GOPe.

“Yeah right. She wouldn’t even stand up against men wearing purses.”

LOL, not me. I was front-and-center with taking her down here. In this case, I just pointed how easy she had it - all she had to do was keep her word and sign a bill, and she was on her way towards DC, in the top tier...even if she didn’t like the bill (she could have kept that to herself). At one point I noted that politicians dream of a moment like hers...handed right to her.

Instead she lets a threat, a threat that wound up being an empty threat, and some sick-looking top adviser, who probably would have been rejected by the Lincoln Project, talk her out of it and instead try to slick her way out of it...and with that, she can finish raising her family in South Dakota.

DeSantis is the guy. Trump is waiting to see if he wins reelection in Florida in 2022 before he passes the MAGA torch to him. ........................... The Republicans may like him, but he will be against Crist, Dominion and the South East FLA NY Ballots.
