SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police are searching for a man who fired a gun at a woman outside an abortion clinic on Saturday morning.
No one was injured, San Antonio Police Department spokesperson Christopher Ramos said, crediting an armed bystander who returned fire.
The shooting happened Saturday around 8:30 a.m. in the 7400 block of John Smith Drive, near the intersection of Wurzbach and Babcock roads on the Northwest Side.
A man who arrived with a woman at the facility pulled out a gun and shot at the woman but missed, Ramos said during a morning press conference near the scene.
A person who was with a group of protesters near the clinic saw the shooter and used his handgun to fire at the man, police said. Police said the protester had a license to carry the pistol.
“It is still under investigation... you have a right to defend somebody else,” Ramos said. “... He did something a reasonable person would do. He saw someone engaged in a shooting and so he went and stepped in and intervened and stopped that shooting from occurring.”
The shooter ran away from the scene and dropped a firearm, which investigators believe they found.
Officials are investigating the shooting as a domestic violence incident, and they said the clinic was not the target, Ramos said. He said the shooter and the victim knew each other, but declined to provide more details on the relationship.
While no injuries were reported, some bullets hit the health clinic, authorities said. The victim was transported to police headquarters.
Investigators are canvassing the area in search of the man. Ramos said people in the area should keep an eye out for anything suspicious and that the man could have another weapon.
It’s unknown if the shooter was hit by the gunfire, but as of 10:40 a.m., police said he had not checked into any area hospitals.
Ramos did not provide details on the identity or description of the suspect.
All of the information so far is preliminary and is subject to change, Ramos said. This is a developing story and KSAT 12 will bring more updates as they become available online and on-air.

Classic, but not unusual.
In Texas there is greater access to the tools necessary to do the job.

Dean,
Good people who do nothing let evil flourish.
From my foxhole, this guy did well. He seems to have been at least associated with a RTL protest, defending the helpless, while carrying tools able to defend others as well, including perhaps a woman about to go into a dark place, aka abortion clinic. I think his intervention prevented a possible killing of an unborn, certainly that of the woman, while demonstrating selfless love for the woman regardless of her intent.
Perhaps she will see the irony of her situation, nearly killed intending to kill, but saved by a stranger intending to save, and repent.
God bless the intervening rational man.
One possibility is that the man was trying to force the woman to have an abortion, and she resisted.
Who knew it is illegal to attempt to kill people at abortion clinics?
The perp is in serious trouble. He attempted to deny a woman’s “choice” to kill her baby.
So the shooters idea was to kill the woman because he believed everybody has a right to life. The idiot probably also thought he had God on his side. Here is hoping he gets prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law
That’s the way I see it. The shooter was hiding in the woman’s trunk.
So the idea he was forcing her to get an abortion flies out the window.
I’m guessing he was going to scare her off from getting an abortion.
I hope the child does live and is born. And grows up to be told this story. On how he or she almost was murdered TWICE in one day.
Once from a crazy man hiding in a trunk. Once from a crazy abortionist in an abortuary.
So the guy was going to kill her and the child to keep her from killing the child?
Who knows? He DID fire at her and missed.
This happened in my hometown. I’ve read several local reports about it.
Maybe he was just trying to scare her from getting an abortion.
Very weird.
Crediting an armed bystander who returned fire.
Texas is a bad place to play gangster they return fire you better feel damned lucky if you do.
More range time and they wouldn’t have to look far for the attacker.
Don’t know, maybe it was thus, she intending to abort or maybe he was the motivation to be there to have his child killed and she balked at the door and bolted.
Don’t even know if she was pregnant, do we?
