The choice between Elise Stefanik and Liz Cheney for a House Republican leadership post serves as a proxy war between Donald Trump and Ronald Reagan for the soul of the Party.
Reagan and Cheney — and Republicans generally — appear certain to be the losers.
For decades after he left office, Ronald Reagan was a glue that united Republicans, just as Franklin D. Roosevelt was for Democrats. Now Trump dominates the Republican Party; Liz Cheney had the audacity to tell the truth: that Trump lost the last election, which many of her House GOP colleagues are too cowardly to acknowledge.

The Bush, Dole, Bush, McCrap, Willard dream team really got folks fired up to the polls yet they all lost
As far as I am concerned “TheHill” is just an extension of the WP. I am done with them.

It is not a choice between Reagan or Trump, it’s a choice between Bush or Trump/Reagan
Total B.S.
If Reagan had been around (and younger) in 2016 and Reagan had seen all that we saw since the Clinton era, he and Trump would have been running mates.
We all knew Ronald Reagan, and Liz Cheney is no Ronald Reagan nor does she represent Ronald Reagan. She represents the wing of the Republican party that has been trying to throw away the Reagan legacy and give the nation to the Dims. If Reagan was alive he’d tell the author he has no right to assume he and Liz Cheney agree on anything.
Based on what evidence?
He gave Reagan's eulogy.
In his diary, President Reagan recorded his pleasure in Cheney's defense of the administration, and Reagan's press secretary described Cheney as "probably the most effective supporter the President has in the House of Representatives, because he's intelligent and he can support the President without appearing to be following the President blindly."
Reagan was a maverick in the beginning and was opposed by the Establishment. But they learned to live with him and accept him and many came to see themselves as Reaganites. Trump is a maverick now and in that he has some kinship with Reagan. He wasn't able to tame or win over the GOP Establishment and still faces opposition from the elite.
I don't like Cheney either, but facts are facts and ought to take precedence over one's likes and dislikes.
Cheney worked with the Bush’s to overturn everything Reagan ever tried to do. Weasels do that: Pretend to support while working to destroy.
“Yes, Trump lost - because the Constitutional referees ignored what many saw as obvious fraud, and denied him a win.”
Even Hitler’s elections were honest and legitimate. Dems will stop at nothing to steal power.
But Reagan opened the door to globalization and deindustrialization and wasn't serious about stopping illegal immigration. I concede that Reagan will rank as a better president in our history - one of the best - but we need another Trump now, not another Reagan, and I'll be wary of politicians who want to wrap themselves in Reagan and ignore or dismiss Trump.
Boy, who pulled Al Hunt out of the swamp for this opinion piece? One forgets how awful he was.
Married to the tortured voiced Judy Woodruff.
I don’t see anyone dissing Reagan with regard to Trump. This is an
incredibly misguided notion.
Trump supporters love Reagan.
The Communists still can’t take a pass on inferring Reagan support has
vanished. Total B S.
As if, Liz is anything like Reagan.
Bingo.
Reagan also had a Dem Congress except for 2 measly years of Senate. Trump had all years Repub Senate. Trump actually also dropped the ball on several issues, never mind the chaos of his admin.
Reagan could move it forward. Trump cannot.
Trump is good for many things, but he is not the 2nd coming.
Incorrect premise. Lizard Cheney is NO Ronald Reagan.
I appreciate your discussion. Rather than raging dismissal!
See my #100. The illegal thing seems to be the only thing EverTrumpers put up against Reagan. Yet he had more to work against him than Trump did (in theory).
WAIT! Al FREAKING Hunt is STILL alive? Seriously?
LOL...I forgot to add : Did Reagan get re-elected?
We haven’t dumped one for the other. We have both! The policy differences between the two Presidents aren’t significant IMO. Trump uses tariffs more than Reagan, for example. Their rhetorical styles are very different but policy substance and results matter more.
If my memory serves me correctly Cheney Sr. didn’t support Reagan in either 1976 or 1980 during the primary.
