The chief of the Pentagon’s Central Command said on Tuesday the U.S. military may keep troops near Afghanistan after the delayed withdrawal planned for September 11, 2021.
Speaking to the House Armed Services Committee, Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie, Jr., reportedly stated the Pentagon is engaged in “detailed planning” to ensure that the U.S. military can act against threats in Afghanistan without a permanent presence there. McKenzie’s comments followed assurances last week from Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a visit to Kabul that the United States would remain an active participant in the construction of a democratic Afghanistan in a civilian capacity even after troops leave.

Antiwar party loves war and the war machine when they are in charge. So as we pretend to surrender on 9/11, we are actually going to spend billions hiding out in other countries as our own border is being overrun by colonist alien invaders.
Agree. I am done. I don’t mind us keeping bases in the Middle East in “friendly” nations. Forward deployment is a huge strategic deterrence for minimal cost, but putting troops outside the wire to build schools that will be burned down within a month is pointless.
There are no “friendly” nations in the Middle East.
Nothing makes sense anymore.
Biden Admin got it.
We’ll be building motels there. The big guy gotta get his 10%.
I am not in basic agreement with the idea, for two reasons.
1. The very idea is an admission of failure - the status quo of a semblance of democratic government in Afghanistan cannot be assured after the U.S. leaves. Why publicly telescope such an admission.
2. The Taliban, and others, knowing it is transparent attempt at subterfuge (we are leaving, but if the Taliban “misbehaves” we will be nearby and may take action from afar”), will, when they feel threatened again, make targets of the U.S. forces planted in neighboring countries; expanding their internal Afghan civil war to those countries, and possibly igniting major U.S. actions in Afghanistan again. The end condition could be as if we never left.
If the Biden administration goes through with the idea, I would like to see them find agreement for it with just one country, India. It would expand our growing alliance with India and it will irk the hell out of Pakistan. Both of those things are good things - long term - in my opinion.
If instead Biden makes the new basing deal with Pakistan, those bases will be attacked by the Taliban’s friends in Pakistan - guaranteed.
Russia may have something to say if Biden is looking for deals with the other “stans” north of Afghanistan.
Then the remaining options are back where we already have a large presence - Qatar. Yes, Qatar, where we have the largest U.S. presence in the Middle East, and yes that’s Qatar who is so friendly with the most radical fundamentalist “rebels” in Syria, and yes that’s Qatar where the Muslim Brotherhood makes its HQ.
Any bets?
IRAN is a ‘neighboring country’...................
As China is a neighboring country, I am reminded about, our troops could mingle with theirs. China also is concerned over the stability of Afghanistan.
China runs a port in Iran to supply goods to Afghanistan. India also is building a port also. All this with US support and no sanctions to those building and transport enterprises.
It’s the democrat way. Arghh
Will the taliban destroy the poppy fields or run them for $$$?
Then, everyone could have a bite of General Tso’s Chicken!
Translation: “I will not give up the profits of forever war.”
They were both civilized countries until the WWII era, though.
World leaders since before Alexander the Great 2,300 years ago been trying to "fix" Afghanistan. The only thing that would ever pacify Afghanistan is to kill everyone there and replace the population.
Even if you replaced every Afghan he with an American, the mountainous terrain, the violence of neighboring tribes and countries, and God knows what else that might be in the water, would render these poor transplanted Americans into savages in a few generations. That isolated, mountainous area of the world is designed to create violent tribal societies.
Can’t have those patriots returning to The States.
Sounds like a hedge bet.
I think everyone understands that once we’re out of there, the Taliban completes their takeover of their strongholds. That is the reality. Maintaining democracy there is a pipedream and not worth one American life or one American dollar. Biden wants to make the withdrawal sound like we are half pregnant by spinning we will be close by. The reality is he has no intention of going back in after the Taliban completes their takeover and they will come home.
And there's not an eff to be given on my part. They had 20 years to get their crap together.
“And there’s not an eff to be given on my part. They had 20 years to get their crap together.”
Agreed. When you are dealing with stone age muslim nations that transgress and violate American security, the proper approach is you bring ordinance from above, not democracy from below. Bomb and leave and rinse and repeat until they get the message is the only approach they understand.
