Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., died Tuesday after a more than two-year bout with pancreatic cancer, NBC News confirmed.

Hastings, who served in the House for nearly three decades, was 84. Throughout his career, he held several key committee assignments and leadership positions, most recently as vice chairman of the Rules Committee.

After the congressman’s death, Democrats hold a narrow 218-211 advantage in the House, giving the party a small margin for error in passing legislation. Six seats are vacant.

Hastings, a former federal district court judge, was impeached in 1988 amid accusations of bribery and perjury. The Senate voted to remove him from the bench the next year, but did not vote to disqualify him from holding future office.

“Hastings made the world a better place by the leaving of it.”

Good one.

That Alcee Hastings was even elected to the House says a lot about the low-lives in the Florida district who elected him. Hastings was impeached (by a Demonicrat-controlled House), convicted by the Senate, and removed as a U.S. District judge for corruption.

He was convicted. The House and Senate didn’t declare him ineligible for office. They have to do that. It’s not automatic.

As someone (Mark Twain?) put it ...

“You should only say good things about the dead. ‘So-and-so’ is dead. Good”.

Hmm...bribery, perjury, corruption, abuse of office, at least he died doing something he loved.

He’s dead. It’s a start. He epitomized the dem ethos: public “service” is a means to personal riches, nothing more. He rode the corruption train - even after impeachment as a fed judge - into office and reaped the financial benefits all the way to death. I suspect he was just as useless to his district while dying of cancer - and concealing it from the public so the gravy train wouldn’t halt - as before. Val demings eulogized him, saying he served his constituents blah blah blah. He’ll be replaced by a dem cookie-cutter pasha.

I could have missed something but two of these vacant districts are solid GOP (or did I miss a special election?)

Two are solid DemoKKKrat. Are the remaining two truly open?

Another reason why not caving on the Miller Meeks seat was so important.

America’s deep state and permanent Federal bureaucracy remind me more and more of the Soviets in the 1980s

You climb the greasy pole of statist, glad-handing bureaucratic politics, you establish your patronage networks and form protective political cliques, you steal and skim what you can - and you only leave when you die.

That’s Alcee Hastings. Joe Biden is America’s Konstantin Chernenko.

Impeached by the House, and removed by the Senate. It’s odd that 67 Senators voted to convict (and remove) him, but 51 couldn’t (or wouldn’t) vote to disqualify him from holding office in the future.
