David McGee, an attorney with Beggs & Lane, is the man the Florida Republican named during an appearance Tuesday evening on Tucker Carlson's Fox News show in which he responded to reports that he is under federal investigation over a former relationship.
McGee served for six years as the first assistant at the U.S. Attorney’s Office and for seven years as the lead attorney for a Justice Department's Organized Crime Task Force, according to his biography on the website of his law firm, which is based in Pensacola, Florida.

The New York Times reported Gaetz, 38, is being looked at as part of a broader investigation into local Florida official Joel Greenberg, a political ally who was indicted last summer on an array of charges, including sex trafficking of a minor and financially supporting people in exchange for sex, at least one of whom was an underage girl.
Investigators are said to be examining whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship two years ago with a girl believed to have been 17 at the time and paid her to travel with him. Specifically authorities are trying to determine whether he violated federal sex trafficking laws.
Gaetz told Carlson that the FBI, alongside the Department of Justice, had his father wear a wire to eavesdrop on conversations between him and McGee, who the lawmaker alleged was trying to receive $25 million in exchange for making the allegations disappear. The Florida Republican said his father was set to catch McGee on Wednesday in the act demanding "4.5 million" as a "down payment" on the "bribe," adding further that the New York Times leak hampered the investigation.

What part of “there is no 17-year-old” are you unable to grasp? Tell us what is illegal or untoward about a single guy paying for the travel of an adult female he’s dating?
In general, ignorance of the girl’s age is not a defense to statutory-rape laws. But presumably Gaetz would be prosecuted under the federal Mann Act (transporting females across state lines for illicit sex), and I guess that it’s possible that there could be a mens rea defense to the federal charge (even if there would not be one under the underlying crime).
Gaetz claims that there is no 17-year-old girl, and that he paid for a flight fir someone of legal age. If the girl was 18 and the age of consent in all states in which she traveled was 18 or less, then the feds have no case. I just hope that his answer was straightforward and not Clintonesque, because if the girl was 17 when he “dated” her and he says “well, yes, she was 17 back then, but she turned 18 the day before I said “there is no 17-year-old girl,” so it depends on what the definition of “is” is,” then I’ll never forgive him.

You are correct—-he’s not telling the truth—-the only thing he,’s claiming as truth is that there was an attempt to extort his family for 25 million...if he does in fact have a tape of that, then that’s the truth. I tend to think he was with a 17 year old who he was probably “dating “ (clears throat)So the real issue would be, what part of the story being “true” outweighs the other part,and does it stall Gaetz’s ascent if he can’t prove the 17 year old doesn’t exist?

I guess you want me to believe that he was providing flights and hotels for girlfriend(s) and not fornicating. While possible I am not that naive.

I am just remarking on how far our moral standards have fallen, as a nation. “I was fornicating with a willing adult” would not have made a good defense forty years ago; and this man is a conservative, at least mostly.
