Go for the gold? The U.S. government went for it.
FBI agents were looking for an extremely valuable cache of fabled Civil War-era gold — possibly tons of it — when they excavated a remote woodland site in Pennsylvania three years ago this month, according to government emails and other recently released documents in the case.
On March 13, 2018, treasure hunters led the FBI to Dent’s Run, about 135 miles (220 kilometers) northeast of Pittsburgh, where legend has it an 1863 shipment of Union gold was either lost or stolen on its way to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia.
The FBI has long refused to confirm why exactly it went digging, saying only in written statements over the years that agents were there for a court-authorized excavation of “what evidence suggested may have been a cultural heritage site.”
In any event, the FBI says, the dig came up empty.
But the father-son duo who brought a small army of federal agents to the site remain convinced the FBI uncovered something there — and their lawyer, Bill Cluck, is still pressing the case, successfully suing for access to government emails about the dig.
Those documents, which Cluck provided to The Associated Press, show that federal law enforcement was indeed after buried treasure.
“We believe the cache itself is in the neighborhood of 3x5x8 (feet) to 5x5x8,” wrote K.T. Newton, an assistant U.S attorney in Philadelphia, in a 2018 email marked “Confidential.”

Paging Hannity and the 99%’ers, er, 49’ers
Nope. They say nothing.
Well if you know your alchemy...
My grandfather always said “All politicians were crooks”.
How did he know this?
Because he bribed them with suitcases of cash to get state contracts!
I’m awaiting the finding of the mother lode. No need to watch it till then. And if they do find it it will be all over the news, so I’ll wait for that
“It’s a fool’s errand.
Unless it’s a shipwreck, I don’t believe in “pirates’ gold”, the lost Dutchman mine or any other ‘lost gold’
Ingots like these are not forgotten by those who buried it. They retrieved it looong ago.”
*************************************************************
I believe in LOST BITCOIN PASSWORDS. That’s your modern “buried” treasure.
Oh wait....
WHY would anyone do such a thing?
private theory about the civil war gold. I think it was launderd years ago during one of the gold rushes... this was a lot of gold with claims on it by the US government. 150 years ago it would of been easy to have a fake goldmines and to claim the civil war gold was newly mined. you would noy of needed very many people involved with the deception. my bet is that this has happened to the missing nazi gold also.
“ Ingots like these are not forgotten by those who buried it. They retrieved it looong ago.”

This was my first thought. Unless it was a very unusual set of circumstances, like several involved had a falling out and killed each other and the remaining one or two were killed in battle shortly thereafter, then the gold is long gone.
You want to find out where it went? Look to families that hadvsudden, unexplained, wealth starting within a year or sold of when this went missing, and concentrate on families of those with some connection to the transport of the gold - but that’s a very long shot, as this was 160 or so years ago and the records were likely very incomplete then, and few of them survived (and, perhaps, there might have even been an effort to hide or destroy those records).
HaHaHa.
BTW, I don’t believe in electronic money, either.
One EMT blast and there goes your fortune!!
“ He would tell me stories about how FDR seized gold in the 30’s, and to never count on the government to protect your rights.”

Wise man, hopefully he wasn’t victimized too much by these people. Naturally, government schools will NEVER teach this.
Why would you even mention such a potential treasure trove in the first place? Maybe once it came up empty as a “fish that got away” story, but NEVER beforehand.
“In any event, the FBI says, the dig came up empty.”
They would say that anyways.
The FBI was probably just trying to figure out a way to pay their turnpike tolls to get out of the state.
Don't even need that. Turn off the power and cut cell networks and buh-bye access. Same as any debit/credit card or phone app for payment.
Sadly I didn’t need to learn that lesson!
I hate it when EMT’s go boom...
It was in the grave marked “unknown” next to the grave marked “Arch Stanton.”
