My speculation, is Rudy told Trump "it's 14th Amendment or bust, and this lady doesn't know what she's saying." It's also possible, Rudy wanted to go down in history as The Lawyer Who Saved Trump...we ARE dealing with huge egos, and NY egos at that.
Trump is sitting there thinking "who am I to believe...America's Mayor/Mr 9/11 or the Kracken-lady quoting Benford's Law whatever that is?"
It's not that much of a stretch. Everyone has an Achilles heel. And I bet after 3 years, with a raging pandemic occupying the President, the left used their knowdge of his Achilles heel in setting the trap. That's probably giving them too much credit, and I don't believe they got it all right. But I suspect they expected Trump to go nuclear legally with Rudy in the driver's seat vs a hungry, younger, sharper, more tech-savvy pit bull Esq. The irony, is Trump did the same thing to Hillary in 2016...he/Bannon knew she was not going to MI or WI or PA as much, and he attacked the Blue Wall while she wasted time elsewhere.
The teachable moment here, is that we need to do better on this stuff. We have time and we are learning like with Super Bowl advertisers and hedge funds. All isn't lost. But it is sad how we got here.

I think that indeed the Left finally, after 3.5 years, learned that Trump’s vulnerability was his second echelon chain of command, and that if they could pull something off where he would have to rely on the FBI, JCS, etc to do something, they’d have him.
We’ll see if he becomes more discerning in his personnel, or if by 2024 it even matters.
Last bit on this, because Byrne's article is getting some attention. Indeed, he went public back in December on this topic, specifically after his 4.5 hour meeting with DJT that Mr Taylor published, and the pro and con sides have been lining up: is Byrne's account true or BS?
The proof may be hiding in plain sight, and points right to discernment.
That is: if I was running this sort of research/documentation/file briefs etc. operation, I'd demand that all involved sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). The fact that Byrne is going public with pretty detailed posts on his involvement - and that he's not getting sued - strongly suggests he didn't sign an NDA. That, is stupefying.
If this legal machine could even get the basics right, it leads directly to your excellent point about Trump's weakness in the second echelon chain of command.
Trump was an excellent President, and he got shafted...no doubt about it. But he worked in Manhattan real estate AND won in 2016...he knows he's not dealing with a station wagon filled with nuns. Given the enormity of the Dem election machine and his second echelon Achilles heel, small wonder Bidet is occupying the WH today.

Yes, you’ve been wrong about literally everything the last few weeks and calling people communists who read the Constitution, etc. But you don’t have to keep being that way. You do have the choice of stopping, you know.
The legal strategy really didn't matter one way or another, since the judges weren't going to allow a case to proceed and facts presented at all-finding some specious argument as to why it should be dismissed.
