Philip Rivers retiring from NFL after 17 seasons, including last one with Colts

The future Hall of Fame? quarterback is calling it a career

While the world awaits what's expected to be a retirement decision from Drew Brees, another NFL legend has opted to make his decision quickly. Philip Rivers, 39, recently noted he'd consider retirement but was also open to returning to the Indianapolis Colts for a second year, if they'd have him. Just over one week after being eliminated from the playoffs at the hands of the Buffalo Bills in an AFC wild-card game, Rivers is instead going to hang up his cleats -- he told The San Diego Union-Tribune -- ending a 17-year NFL career that will one day see him inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"It's just time," Rivers said. "It's just right."

The eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback already has the next step of his football life planned and ready to go.

Apparently, the qualification for being a Hall of Fame QB has been lowered over time... No Super Bowls, no Super Bowl appearances, no real good stats and he's a Hall of Fame candidate?

Pardon me Mr. Walke... I disagree completely with that assessment. I don't even think Aaron Rodgers is qualified... 5 NFC Championships... 1 win? Even Donovan McNabb accomplished that and he isn't in the HOF.

The tendency of these 'sports writers' (if you can call them that) calling average players Hall of Fame candidates is becoming a bit tedious.

Rivers was overshadowed by the man he replaced in San Diego (Drew Brees), and by two other first round QB picks in 2004 (Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger). Five Superbowl wins between the three of them.

Rivers has been a class act. No, he never won a Super Bowl, never even appears in a Super Bowl. But he put up a lot fo wins. It takes a lot to win championship, and a little bit of luck too. Good luck to him and his wife and their eight children.

He’s 5th all-time in passing yards and TD passes, with eight pro bowl selections. No Super Bowl appearances, but I think that’s more about the team around him than Rivers himself. He doesn’t have the HOF resume of Tom Brady or anything, but I’d still have a very hard time keeping him out.

Of the current and recently retired quarterbacks, only Brady, Brees, and Rodgers should be in Canton. Rapist Roethlisberger, Rivers, and Eli Manning, do not belong and I was a Giant fan when I followed the league but separate playoff Eli from regular season Eli. Time will sort out whether Russell Wilson and Mahomes get there.

Dan Marino never won a Super Bowl, and in my humble opinion he was THE best quarterback of the last 40 years.

Rivers retires with a 65% career completion % and is #5 on the all-time lists for passing yards and TDs. Sure, some of those numbers are inflated in the modern era of passing dominance in the NFL. But it’s hard to argue that he’s not a legitimate Hall of Famer.

Eli Manning might be borderline HOF but he will get there on the strength of two Super Bowl rings and MVPs for both of them.

Well deserved and great career. Close 2nd best Charger QB ever (14 is still 1)
I would normally say I wish he had gone out a Charger… but not these days. Glad he had another playoff shot.
Also happy he went out with Brees… those two are always linked (as is Eli). Absolutely should be HOF.

He will be given a tryout by one of the sports networks if he can speak intelligently without freezing up in front of the camera. CBS, FOX, ESPN, NBC Sports(somebody will hire him).
He also may end up as a coach in the NFL.

Sir Phillip started and finished every single game in his 4 years at NC State.

I was lucky to have been there at Carter-Finley Stadium for his debut.

Watched Rivers play in college, one game, live, where he (NC State) beat the Seminoles at Doak Campbell. Tore every FSU fans’ hearts out and stomped into the ground, 2002.

I don't even think Aaron Rodgers is qualified... 5 NFC Championships... 1 win?

By those criteria, an offensive lineman stuck on a crummy team (Anthony Munoz) would have no hope of reaching the Hall of Fame regardless of his performance.

The Buffalo Bills/SF 49ers never saw much post-season action during O.J. Simpson's career. Did his performance on the field not earn a slot in the Hall of Fame?

Does Eli Manning go to the front of the line because he was really good when he counted, but had slightly above pedestrian numbers otherwise?

Yes, playoff performance and NFL Championships have a role to play in determining the best (I consider Brady GOAT, even though he is no where NEAR the most talented). There must be a path that allows great players on mediocre teams to be recognized.

That was sarcasm. His career earnings are $243 Million. Not including endorsements. I think he’ll get by.

I told my 8 kids they were my retirement plan....I knew they’d take care of me.

“Good luck with that!” was their response. ;-)

God willing, I’ll be leaving each of them something nice....
