Pelosi Reelected Speaker By House Democrats Despite Huge House Losses
NPR ^ | 11/18/2020 | Deirdre Walsh

Nancy Pelosi has been reelected speaker of the House by her caucus for the next session of Congress, marking what will be her fourth term with the gavel. The caucus vote was conducted virtually, but Pelosi was approved with a voice vote.

Pelosi, 80, did not not face any challenge for her post, but she will also need to secure a simple majority — 218 Democratic votes — by the full House of Representatives in January to be sworn in again as speaker.

In 2019, several Democrats voted for someone other than her on the floor, but with a slimmer margin in the majority after the 2020 election, she cannot afford to lose more than a handful of votes.

House Democrats are holding leadership elections as they grapple with unexpected losses and the prospects for a Congress that remains divided. The GOP appears likely to maintain control of the Senate. Plus House Republicans picked up at least eight seats and several races are too close to call.

Other top Democratic leaders — Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C. — who are 80 and 81 — are also running unopposed. House Democratic Caucus Chair Hakeem Jeffries, of New York, did not face any competition for his post as the fifth-ranking leader, and was reelected on Wednesday.

Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-Ill., who ran the House Democrats' campaign arm, said she would not run for another term. Two other Democrats — Rep. Tony Cardenas of California and Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney of New York — are vying for the position that will be decided later this month.

Top leaders and political analysts forecasted that Democrats would expand their majority — potentially picking up as many as 15 seats — but the party's disappointment instead

Pelosi is hateful and as dementia-addled as Biden. There are worse things than having this hag bumbling in public. She will remind people what an absolute farce Congress has become. And given the unexpectedly narrow House margins, her speakership will lack the clout she expected. IOW House Dems are prepared to back a losing horse. That’s a net positive IMHO

I thought the news reader I heard on the radio this morning said the Nanzi was "nominated for Speaker," and that the vote would occur after the 117th Congress is sworn in in Jan, 2021?

She was chosen as their nominee to be House Speaker...she was not yet “re-elected” to the post.

💃🏻 Is this good news? To be fair she does keep some of the more out there elements of the party in check and...well exposes all the divisions and...strengthens the GOP as a result.

Yes, it is. Another illusion...like the one claiming Joe Biden is president-elect...an illusion...Trump has the goods on the rigged election and I suspect both will be in the slammer before long...tic toc

Hmm, good points C.P.

Though I think Nancy is just as radical as AOC, she is the one who is much better at playing the politics.

That is what saves her.

Did they use dominion software?

A friend of mine bought a new Dominion vehicle off of the dealership lot. When he got home, it has 498,000 miles on it.

All three of them are of an age to be particularly vulnerable to the CCP-Flu.

Just an observation.

Isn’t the total seat count @ 422? So wouldn’t 212 that make the Republicans winning a majority, since half of 422 is 211?

Never mind: the total is 435; and 422 seats I think were up for re-election this year??? Whatever it is, I’m quite mistaken. :-)

Their losses were hardly “huge”, as they SHOULD have been, and possibly were if the votes were accurate.

Anyway, I am unhappy to report that NO ONE CHALLENGED LIZ CHENEY for her GOP leadership post.

This is why we need a new party.

Fake. No elections have been certified. No guarantee Dems hold the House. Speaker elections are normally held after the next Congress convenes in early Jan.

I just talked about that the other day. No. Just think about it.

Short term, in a three way race rats win a supermajority just like 1912 , period. And frankly that’s IT, that’s the END.

In the long term (pretending there would be a long term), every GOP politician you don’t like could just join your new party because you have no way of stopping them from doing so!! The Whigs didn’t really go any place, the Northern Whigs all became Republicans.

Win primaries. If you can’t win primaries how can you imagine winning 3-way general election? If Trump had run third party, Hillary would just have been reelected.

Her last name and her vag make her unassailable for her House colleagues? Fine. The Republican voters of Wyoming can do for her then, all that’s needed is a viable challenger to step up. Cantorization.

Listen the entire platform would change. Even of the GOPers came on board they would be back benchers. No more globalism, no more free teade, no more massive immigration. The 100 M workers that never vote and stay home would finally have something to vote for.

You think about GOPer.

A new workers/freedom/nationalist party would have a different base than the current GOP. A third of the GOP are globalist/open border/free trade Chamber of Commerce cheap labor hacks. We ditch them and add 50 million workers + the current middle class base.
