The first day Ma’Kiya Congious wore her Black Lives Matter mask to work, no one seemed to bat an eye. In fact, several customers at the Whataburger location in Fort Worth complimented her on the face covering, which is also emblazoned with a fist.
But when the Black 19-year-old returned to work the following Monday, a White customer threatened to call the hamburger chain’s corporate office over the mask, prompting a chain of events that led Congious’s managers to fire her and call the police on their own employee.
As Whataburger insists it did nothing wrong, the former cashier filed a discrimination complaint Wednesday with Texas state officials, alleging she was let go specifically because of her race and the message on her mask.
“It’s not a political thing,” Congious said at a news conference Wednesday. “It’s just a statement that says ‘Black Lives Matter’ because we do matter.”

“If we allow any non-Whataburger slogans as part of our uniforms, we have to allow all slogans,” the company said in a statement to KDFW on Wednesday. “This could create tension and conflict among our employees and our customers. It is our job as a responsible brand to proactively keep our employees and customers safe."

I love how that movie showcased corporate BS. If you have a minimum requirement and the employee meets that requirement, what’s the big deal? Unless there are other issues, of course.
What if the employee only had one more piece of flair than required - would the manager still be getting on their case?

It’s a blatantly political statement by the employee. It seems to me that her employer was totally within their rights to fire her.
In my small town at the city hall a black female employee wore a I can’t breath shirt to work and another employee who’s brother and nephew are police officers objected. It resulted in a large shouting match. All could have been avoided if the office manager had told the black employee that is not appropriate for work, no political slogans, go change now.
Making her unemployed and putting her back on welfare is not a win.

And just WHO made her unemployed? For that answer, she needs only to look in a mirror.
BS. It's all political. But Whataburger, as well as other chain restaurants, need to be firm about what they do and do not allow. If it were me, I'd insist that all employees wear only company-logo'ed attire and pins, especially for all customer-contact positions *and* for the company to provide their own free masks for every employee.
