Arizona Senate candidate Mark Kelly (D) on Thursday apologized for an offensive joke he made in 2018 while discussing his brothers return from space.
Kelly, a retired astronaut, addressed the Boy Scouts of America, Northern New Jersey Council in 2018. During a Q&A portion, Kelly was asked about physiological changes his brother Scott Kelly, also an astronaut, underwent after returning.
Its gotten so bad, that we recently had to release him back into the wild, Mark Kelly quipped, adding, Hes like halfway between an orangutan and a Howler Monkey. Weve even changed his name to Rodrigo. He lives in the woods.
Kelly apologized for the comment in a statement to the Arizona Republic.
"My brother's year in space was really hard on him and we tried to bring some light to his difficult ordeal, but this comment does not do that and I apologize and deeply regret it, he told the newspaper.
The footage was surfaced by businessman Moses Sanchez, a Republican who ran for mayor of Phoenix in 2018.

Now that’s my kind of joke. LOL!
One time I was at work and there was some confusion. I thought that my bosses wanted me to tell a joke.
So I said, “A squirrel walks into a bar...”
My bosses burst out laughing and I said, “I’m not finished yet!”
They laughed again and said they wanted something else.
Oh, well. The world will never know how the joke ends, because I cannot remember it. ;)
Well, if you do run for office, expect a tell-all book by your sister sometime soon. ;)
Given the fact that Grandpa Groundhog is losing Latino support every day and there is no enthusiasm for the top of the Donkey ticket, this could be all McSally needs to wrap it up. This by the way, is what great oppo research looks like. “An address to the Boy Scouts” in 2018? And McSally’s team found it? I\As a guy who was in that business, I’m impressed.
In the USA we say,"It was a joke."
Who is Rodrigo?
The other team was short a female player. I said, "it's ok, they have "Junior" playing for them." He wasn't a very good athlete.
Some of those family members still haven't forgiven that remark. It's been 30 years...if they haven't gotten over it by now, an apology from me won't do anything.
I grew up in a HH where my stepfather had a caustic wit. I was frequently a target, but I knew what he was doing, i.e. preparing me for the cold, cruel world. You know, the sticks and stones kind of thing. I never took it personally, though I've learned over the years a small minority agree with me.
In that regard, my daughter is on my side, especially when my wife gets mad at something I said, no matter how innocuous it seemed: "Mom needs to get over herself", or words to that effect.
Jimmy the Greek did get fired for saying something else offensive over a decade later.
My guess is, for derogatorily giving to his orangutan / howler monkey Irish brother a Hispanic name, Rodrigo, in a state with a one third Hispanic population.
That went right over my head. What is "HH"?
I have to admit he appeared somewhat simian to me.
...Isnt it racist to call someone a monkey?...
Only the rhesus macaque monkey (Macaca mulatta)
HH=household, sorry for the confusion. I’m big on acronyms, saves time.
I once had a Paki business associate that called lots of people monkey.
“that monkey will not pay his bills. “
Who can forget the screaming fits caused by this cartoon during the Obama mis-administration!

It’s just stupid.
He should apologize for being a Chinese agent and an enemy of the people.
Well I forgive you, because I was a USAF Tech Controller constantly communicating with stations down the line on teletype links where we used Q & Z signals from ACP 131-1, along with our own abbreviating short-talk, such as "INT QRK, how copy?"
I would have understood had you not made it in caps, as household is hh, not HH.
My own pro-sign was hm. kkkkk/hm
>>kkkkk/hm<<
5 strikeouts and hug me?
So ANY reference comparing a person and a monkey or ape is offensive.
Everyone can draw their own conclusion.
