In the early hours of Aug. 10, caravans from across the city ransacked high-end stores in and around downtown after rumors circulated on social media that Chicago police had shot and killed a 15-year-old Black boy on the South Side. Police did shoot 20-year-old Latrell Allen, who is Black, the day before. Police allege Allen fired gunshots at them, but officers were not equipped with body-worn cameras, and no other footage of the incident has been made available. Allen is expected to recover.
Images of people walking in and out of department stores with their hands full of products transfixed a confused nation. Mayor Lori Lightfoot called the looting an assault on Chicago, while the Rev. Jesse Jackson said it was humiliating and morally wrong.
But young Black activists pushed back. When protesters attack high-end retail stores that are owned by the wealthy and service the wealthy, that is not our city and has never been meant for us, Black Lives Matter Chicago said in a statement after the looting. These protests can only end when the safety and wellbeing of our communities is finally prioritized. So which is it? Once the looting stopped, the nations attention quickly moved on. But the problems endemic to Chicago, the problems that provided the tinder for this particular blaze, remain. And they deserve to be addressed.
Prioritizing Black communities has always been a problem for Chicago. Since arriving en masse during the Great Migration more than a century ago, Black Chicagoans have been violently relegated to the margins, exploited at every turn and expected to do more with less. Racism in Chicago even shocked Martin Luther King Jr., who said he had never seen even in Mississippi and Alabama mobs as hostile and as hate-filled as the ones he saw here.

So criminal activity proves that people deserve things they’ve stolen?
What next, rapists deserve free access to whomever they desire to rape?
Is that really what they mean to say?
“Deserve” reparations? Isn’t there a doctrine of “clean hands” when it comes to making your case before any tribunal?
Thugs and thieves do not deserve any reward for THEIR lawless behavior. In looting and wanton destruction of the property of others who are in no way responsible for their circumstances, they have set themselves outside any interpretation of redress for any past wrongs, real or imagined.
Any systemic racism that exists in this country may be found almost exclusively in those venues where Democrat rule has been the normal set of circumstances for DECADES. No Republicans are to be found anywhere, and self-reform is apparently not an option for any of these one-party towns.
Ill give you reparations on one condition, Those who support reparations should be sent with those who get, send them all back to Africa they lose their citizenship and are never to return
“Tell them to blame Oprah. Shes from Chicago and is a billionaire. She got their share, no doubt.”
Actually Oprah is an wonderful example that a black person born in poverty to a single mother, as many blacks are today, can through hard work and determination rise above adversity to become a billionaire. Is this possible in any African country?
Despite her circumstances, she made good choices. She stayed in school, despite being pregnant at 14 and having her son die in infancy. She found a job in radio at age 19. She developed an audience and built that audience into a media empire.
Whether you agree with her politics or not, Opah wasn’t given her wealth and fame. She owes poor black Chicagoans no more than any successful person and is no more to blame for the lifestyle those who made bad choices lead.
If we want to have an honest discussion on race we need to address the issue of personal responsibility. A third generation single teen mother who hangs out with the gang bangers, and doesn’t get a high school diploma has almost no future. It doesn’t matter if she was born black and raised on the south side of Chicago or born white in a redneck trailer park in rural Georgia. A teen who rejects education and expects to hit it big as a pimp, drug dealer, rapper, or basketball star is almost certainly going to be disappointed for his lot in life.
Enjoy the third world, Chicago!
You know...It has seemed like for several years blacks and whites got along much better and race relations had improved quite a bit ...That is, until Obama was elected and things started going down hill...Used to be, you didn’t hear very much the old ‘40’s-’50’s saying “Send ‘em back to Africa...”
Now, since Obama and the recent actions of the BLM and many young blacks, it has started again...
NBC is Comcast
Comcast reported giving $150 to BLM
Comcast is the nation’s #3 telecom provider
Should monopolized & federally licensed telecom be allowed to force-feed its helpless subscribers with Marxism?
I threw out our TV in 1988 and have not had one in the house since. I have experienced exactly no nostalgia for it. My wife and kids got over it in about a week. The kids started reading books for entertainment and discovered the value of history and biographies and none of the four grew up to be mushy headed Liberals.
Looters deserve to be shot.
I hope the Democrats make this argument the centerpieces of their election campaign.
Bttt
How can the looting be the result of “paid Trump plants”....and at the same time be “necessary and legitimate reparations”.
I am not confused. I know a criminal when I see one.
Well done....
This article is even more valid than the excerpt suggests. Yet another leftist equates lending someone money with stealing from him.
Tired of the incessant talk of reparations, period. Totally not going to happen...unless of course, the Leftist DEM BidenIdiot gets elected......
What they DESERVE is being kicked in the ass so hard their Grandchildren will limp!
I hate autocorrect. Valid=vapid
