Was the pistol in his hand or his waistband? I can’t really tell from the video. At the very least, this was incompetence on the part of the police.

Hereafter, I would not open the door for the police in Phoenix. I’d put a sign on the door. “ Due to the death of Ryan Whitaker, the occupant will not open the door for anyone identifying themselves as a police officer, until a call to the police confirms your identity. I think you are correct. He was swatted by the caller and it was not a righteous shoot. Manslaughter is the more than likely charge and the officer should be held responsible for his actions.
I cannot go along with haters on FR that all cops are bad and evil mob. They sound just as bad as CNN and BLM. When these FR cop haters find find the perfect man or woman on this earth please let the rest of humanity know, we need to see this person. A paid public servant who’s received training in how to deal with stressful situations killing a guy who was following orders isn’t one of them.
Here’s the easy question: if you were the shooter, as a civilian, but everything else about the situation was identical, would you be in jail right now? And when that answer is yes, excusing the cop (who probably isn’t in jail right now, and knowing how these cases go probably never will be) is WRONG. Even a little bit.

Poor judgement, procedure, and actions on both parts led to a tragedy.
It’s perfectly legal to have a gun in your home for protection. It’s perfectly legal to answer the door with your gun. You can’t point it unless there is a threat. It does not appear he pointed it, however, while it was legal for him to have the gun in his hand, did that prove to be smart? In this case no. As others have, I have to ask why did he answer the door if he thought he was going to meet a threat?
This is about the third or fourth police shooting I can recall in the last two or three years where someone is shot answering the door with a gun. Honest gun owners should evaluate, not from the police end, but from the homeowners side, what you do and what’s smart to do when you answer your door. As a defensive shooter, we train scenarios. That can be on a range or in your head, but if you have a gun for home defense, like concealed carry, you should create scenarios and ask yourself how you would respond and what the consequences might be.
I have considered many times how to respond if I were pulled over while carrying in order to make sure the officer doesn’t need to unnecessarily escalate a simple traffic stop. People should consider the same if you are going to answer the door armed. Me? I often am carrying in my house, concealed same as I carry outside. If I answered the door it would still be concealed. If it wasn’t concealed it would be holstered. Holstered or concealed is not a threat. In your hand or behind your back could be confused as a potential threat.
This is not a either a judgement or exoneration of the cops. It’s an attempt to break the accident chain before it happens. Friendly on friendly is never a good thing.

He has no way of knowing, and no reason to believe, that cops are responding to a domestic, or anything else. He’s just answering his door in the dark in the kidnapping capital of the country.
