President Trump says he will sign an Executive Order to ease the suffering of those harmed by the pandemic-related shutdowns and to stimulate the economy. Congress has failed to agree on a new package to accomplish these things.
Trumps Executive Order would include these four components: (1) a payroll tax holiday until the end of the year, (2) an extension of enhanced unemployment benefits until the end of the year, (3) an extension of the eviction moratorium for federal subsidized housing, and (4) a suspension of student loan payments until further notice.
Questions surround the legality of accomplishing at least some of these things via executive order. Trumps response to that might be, so sue me.
There are also questions about the fiscal impact of some of the measures, at least for those who still care about the national debt. In addition, there are questions about the efficacy of a payroll tax cut and the wisdom of extended generous unemployment benefits.
However, as a political matter, Trumps move looks like a masterstroke. Since the days of FDR, the public has always seemed to approve of presidents who act to ameliorate suffering while Congress diddles. A flurry of activity, even of the futile or potentially counterproductive kind, makes a president look energetic and caring.
In this instance, Trumps move might well force congressional Democrats to reach a deal. That outcome, too, would be a political win for the president.

Less than four years.
And his dictatorial unconstitutional diktats like DACA are still being litigated in court.
That will be the headline: "Trump Cuts Unemployment Benefits by a Third - Women and Minorities Hardest Hit." :)
So sue me. OMG I love it.
Geeze you guys
He’s goading them.
They don’t have a choice but to accept his offer
Group other than congress sues and stops Trump, Dems still have to support his position.
“Dear, American People. Yeah, Yeah, I luv yuh. I’ve done everything I can to help you but, the Dems don’t seem as interested in your welfare as I am.
What a shame.
Just a shame”
mic drop
Good grief. Just last week, everyone here was boo hooing the 600 dollars a week enhanced unemployment. Now were praising it??? Amazing! Id rather everyone get the 1200 myself.
What hes doing is completely illegal and will be knocked down in the courts. In the meantime, people and companies will be jerked around.
I disagree. Now prove me wrong by substantiating your statement with the relevant laws or parts of the Constitution that make these particular actions beyond the scope of an EO.
Ill wait.
It’s 2020 and the Republic is hanging by a thread you are back in 1952 winning election follow the Constitution we are in a life-and-death struggle for the country and the Constitution but you just go ahead and stay in the past and by the way just keep criticizing anyting any remote thing that Trump does that isn’t perfect
Hmmmm....
Prolly
Anytime any president uses executive orders I cringe. This is not the way things were meant to be.
They seemed to believe they had President Trump trapped into allowing them to sneak by their Republic killing demands by tying it to the aid needed by Americans in the middle of this crisis.
Fortunately for us, the administration used tactics that the dems didn't seem to expect and got the aid out to those in need without sacrificing our freedoms as the dems are demanding.
I applaud him and hope those people in need will be able to carry on until we can finally get past this crisis.
The President is supposed to faithfully execute the laws. Refusing to collect a mandated tax is not faithful execution.
Look.. I get it. The law today is so twisted and complicated, and Court system so corrupted, it's damned near impossible to KNOW how they will rule. We'll see. They've certainly shocked me in the past. I still haven't gotten over how an "anonymous tip" meets the standards for getting a warrant set out in the 4th Amendment.
On a more political front: I think it's pretty risky having FEMA disburse these funds. There's a pretty good chance we're going to have a major hurricane hit the US somewhere this fall. When that happens, no matter how much aid Trump sends, the MSM will do nothing but trumpet how "FEMA is hamstrung by all the fund Trump illegally gave away in his EO's".
It'll be bunk. But, they'll say it anyway. And, it will hurt.
That's it right here. No time for green eye shades and sharp pencils, Americans need help and DJT just cut thru the BS to help them.
He cut off Pelosi Galore at the knees!
I've been defending Trump almost daily for more than 4 years now. I'm a huge fan. This is a big gamble, that might pay off. We'll see. I already thought he was on the way to being re-elected, rather easily.
Yes I love it. Republicans waited and sat on their hands. Trump is the man.
I believe states need to apply for the assistance, so pressure will certainly be on RAT governors to get on board.
1. The EO doesnt end the payroll tax. It DEFERS it. If Congress doesnt cut the payroll tax through legislation and they will be under tremendous pressure to do so these taxes WILL still be owed.
2. The money for the unemployment payments isnt a new Federal appropriation. It was already appropriated by Congress but hasnt been spent yet. Im pretty sure this was previously the legal basis for the President to re-allocate defense appropriations bills to construct the border wall.
Not much choice with the pandemic. The economy will adjust but it will take time. People aren't traveling, going to restaurants, etc. And they won't. An entire sector disappeared along with most of the jobs.
Economic growth is the only correct way to pay back the debt. We'll get that back and we'll prosper as long as the economy is allowed to change.
