TRUMP’S POLITICAL MASTERSTROKE
Powerline ^ | August 8,2020 | BY PAUL MIRENGOFF

President Trump says he will sign an Executive Order to ease the suffering of those harmed by the pandemic-related shutdowns and to stimulate the economy. Congress has failed to agree on a new package to accomplish these things.

Trump’s Executive Order would include these four components: (1) a payroll tax holiday until the end of the year, (2) an extension of enhanced unemployment benefits until the end of the year, (3) an extension of the eviction moratorium for federal subsidized housing, and (4) a suspension of student loan payments until further notice.

Questions surround the legality of accomplishing at least some of these things via executive order. Trump’s response to that might be, “so sue me.”

There are also questions about the fiscal impact of some of the measures, at least for those who still care about the national debt. In addition, there are questions about the efficacy of a payroll tax cut and the wisdom of extended generous unemployment benefits.

However, as a political matter, Trump’s move looks like a masterstroke. Since the days of FDR, the public has always seemed to approve of presidents who act to ameliorate suffering while Congress diddles. A flurry of activity, even of the futile or potentially counterproductive kind, makes a president look energetic and caring.

In this instance, Trump’s move might well force congressional Democrats to reach a deal. That outcome, too, would be a political win for the president.

I would prefer if the President recinded the State of Emergency before anything else. Then the states can do what they like as per their citizens. Extend unemployment on their own dime and keep things closed, or get back to normal and let people get back to work/school.

Uncle sugar is all tapped out.

You have FICA taken out of your check each pay period. Your employer matches it and it goes into the social security system. That system is already deeply in trouble because congress has been dipping int it for decades, so the little dab won’t have any effect on social security. In the mean time you get to keep the 6.2% each pay period and your boss keeps the matching amount.

Will it hurt social security? Not really. If you make $50,000 a year and owe a million dollars what difference does an extra $100,000 make?

What he’s doing is completely illegal and will be knocked down in the courts. In the meantime, people and companies will be jerked around

Actually he's doing it because the courts said in effect that Obama data eo was now the law. So if they strike down his eos they have to strike down Obama s as well

Hey all you Pearl clutchers and constitutional experts. We have only two friggin months before the election to freaking months and you’re all talking about constitutional illegalities and lawsuits and courts none of that will have time for that. This is Trump’s brilliant rope-a-dope that’s all

Is PDJT going to backfill SSI with some already authorized printed money? 6 months of no payroll tax collection would just about zero out SS Disability and Medicare Part A reserves, and would put Medicare Parts B & D $100 billion in the hole. Regular SS has enough reserves to cover it, but would take about a 16% cut in it’s reserves. See “Table 1”: https://www.ssa.gov/OACT/TRSUM/index.html

This is not a master stroke. It’s a huge mistake. What he’s doing is completely illegal and will be knocked down in the courts. In the meantime, people and companies will be jerked around.

While that may be true, if the dems try to stop it, it'll be suicidal for them.

It is genius.

I think this money is already allocated in the prior pandemic relief bill, if so, I'm sure the democrats are hating letting that get by. Wonder who put it in there? Finally, a "you have to pass it to find out what's in it" plus for the force of good in this country.

Also, the payroll tax thing was done in the form of a reduction by Bush I think in the 2008 economic crises - only to expire during Obama.

. I am worrying about precedent. This is dangerous and some of these orders are almost certainly illegal and unconstitutional. We rejected monarchy 246 years ago. I am not inclined to start cheering it now.

This is s “dangerous illegal unconstitutional” precedent?
Say, where were you when Obama repeatedly violated the law with his unconstitutional executive orders including DACA?
And where have you been these last months when Democrat governors like Whitmar continued to enact and enforce unconstitutional illegal lockdown diktats?

I don’t think he wants to be a “king.”

I DO think that he does this stuff to aggravate the traditional pols.

If Obama can have his “pen and a phone”, why can’t Trump?

Yes, some of it will be killed in the courts. But most of it will not.

And if you are on the end of the largesse, are you going to complain?
