TRUMP’S POLITICAL MASTERSTROKE
Powerline ^ | August 8,2020 | BY PAUL MIRENGOFF

Posted on 08/08/2020 2:41:07 PM PDT by Hojczyk

President Trump says he will sign an Executive Order to ease the suffering of those harmed by the pandemic-related shutdowns and to stimulate the economy. Congress has failed to agree on a new package to accomplish these things.

Trump’s Executive Order would include these four components: (1) a payroll tax holiday until the end of the year, (2) an extension of enhanced unemployment benefits until the end of the year, (3) an extension of the eviction moratorium for federal subsidized housing, and (4) a suspension of student loan payments until further notice.

Questions surround the legality of accomplishing at least some of these things via executive order. Trump’s response to that might be, “so sue me.”

There are also questions about the fiscal impact of some of the measures, at least for those who still care about the national debt. In addition, there are questions about the efficacy of a payroll tax cut and the wisdom of extended generous unemployment benefits.

However, as a political matter, Trump’s move looks like a masterstroke. Since the days of FDR, the public has always seemed to approve of presidents who act to ameliorate suffering while Congress diddles. A flurry of activity, even of the futile or potentially counterproductive kind, makes a president look energetic and caring.

In this instance, Trump’s move might well force congressional Democrats to reach a deal. That outcome, too, would be a political win for the president.

I understand your view, but Trump and people advising him know how this is supposed to work.

They have timed it well. I'll give them that.

I know other side cheats. I know we're in a war and I want to win. But, if we win by shredding the rules and furthering the notion that Presidents can do anything they want, what have we won?

Democrats will get the office back some day.

As a self-employed individual that is my biggest tax cost.

I understand that. And I don’t think it will fly.

That said, I also don’t want $500 billion or whatever it is going to all the pork and blue bailouts that don’t have anything to do with COVID-19 no matter what.

It is politics. And if it is shot down (as I think it will be) that will simply be precedent for the next President who tries it.

I simply think it is a bluff...and I hope I am not wrong.

Ultimately it will be up to the SCOTUS to decide if it's constitutional or not

Once upon a time, that statement would have given me some comfort that the right think would ultimately be done. Sadly, those days are long gone.

The Washington Post is very angry, according to the link. Yesterday, their “fact checker” said Biden didn’t say what we saw him say on video. Then Biden apologized for saying it. Silly Wapo.

I don't know about where you live, but here in Louisville, employers are BEGGING people to come back to work. GE is running ads all day, every day offering $15+ per hour with full benefits.

Are you aware of how many people who are not working? Who can't just pick up and move or may not have the qualifications to work for GE?? Not all economies are recovering at the same speed. If we have to wait for congress to move on this, we could be in big trouble. Remember Venezuela? Didn't take long did it. You strike when the iron is hot. It's much more effective that way.

As an employer, I stress every day about coming up with enough work to keep my employees working. Guess what. Not a single one has come up to me and say he would rather be on unemployment, but if I have to throw in the towel, I'll be sure to suggest to them that they move to Louisville.

State of Emergency enables the states to underwrite 25% of the $400 and the Feds to underwrite any other amount by 75%

As the reporterette exasperated “$400 will be hardship when they were receiving $600”

So, the states can’t say not to the 1st part and will be difficult not to take the second....

genius

I haven't noticed a great many such threads. O

There are literally hundreds if not thousands of such threads on here. In fact they have attracted the most debates and the most anger at the communist like tactics used by the dictatorial Dem governors like Whitmar.
Compared to them, Trump has been extremely cautious and done things by the book (to paraphrase Susan Rice)

What he’s doing is completely illegal and will be knocked down in the courts.

Last year perhaps but in a campaign season, who will oppose it?

Has your State stopped paying unemployment insurance? Remember when it wasn’t a Federal responsibility?

I’ve been unemployed twice in my life, and I’ve had to fire a number of people too. The latter is just as hard, if not harder.

Giving people money, that they might end up having to give back is not compassionate. Of course, FEMA does it all the time.

“How? We’ve had three plus years and I see nothing done.”

It has to be Trump. The GOP members we elect to Congress are worthless.

Trump has made progress on stopping illegal immigration by himself with executive action. He has to do the same with education.

I don't know enough about the two million page Federal Register to understand the pressure points. In my opinion, American stupidity can be laid directly at the feet of our education system. President Trump has to find a way to get at them.

If we don't break them, they will complete their goal of destroying this country.

And I don't mean decades from now.

I am sure the Dems will find that crazy Obama judge in Hawaii or someone like him to issue an unconditional blanket ban to cover the whole country before SCOTUS is back in session.
I am equality sure Barr and the DOJ are already working on an appeal to the inevitable Obama judge ruling against this EO.
It's going to be a very good fight for Trump to be engaged in before the elections.

But is this the new norm? Print money for ever and hand it out?
End this ridiculous emergency order and let life get back to normal.
Yes, for those who are directly forced out of work by the gov’t get continued assistance till the end of the year and that is it.
But if the only way to get votes is by printing $, it is a loosing game.
