Bioethicist Dr. Zeke Emanuel is predicting that up to 250,000 Americans could die directly from the coronavirus by the end of the year. In an interview with CBS News chief Washington correspondent Major Garrett, Emanuel, who is the vice provost for Global Initiatives and chair of the Department of Medical Ethics and Health Policy at the University of Pennsylvania, slammed the Trump administration's response to the pandemic as "incompetent and pretty disastrous."
"Before the year is out, we'll probably have, I would think, between 220,000 and 250,000 Americans who died directly from COVID, not to mention those people who are dying indirectly," Emanuel said in this week's episode of "The Takeout" podcast. Emanuel singled out people with heart conditions or in need of cancer treatment who may not visit the doctor due to concerns about catching the virus as factors contributing to high indirect mortality rates.

Based on how trials have gone so far, I think this is President Trump’s October surprise. And I also think that’s going to lead to a landslide victory.
The choice for voters will end up being between a guy hiding in his basement who CLEARLY has advancing dementia and the hero that stopped COVID-19 by heavily investing in vaccines early on and getting all the FDA bureaucrats out of the way (while still keeping all the safety testing and protocols in place). I’m sure Biden will still get some die-hard liberals, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a lot of people who might otherwise go for Biden not even bother voting.

I hope you’re right about the vaccine. I think Trump will win in a landslide anyway but that wouldn’t hurt. It could be one of several October surprises from Trump.

He should be giddy with joy. He wants everyone over the age of 75 to die. The virus is killing old folks more than any other age group, so what’s the problem?
There are only 7 that infect humans. Four are minor respiratory viruses that are among the over 200 viruses that cause the symptoms we just collectively call “the common cold”. The amount of work it would take (and money) to develop and safety test a vaccine for over 200 different viruses is absolutely obscene. They’d have to charge you $1,000 a shot and probably update it every year. Nobody’s paying for that.
The other three are SARS-CoV-1 (SARS 2003), SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), and MERS-CoV (MERS 2012). SARS 2003 and MERS 2012 both had vaccine candidates that made it through phase 1 and phase 2 human trials successfully. However, by the time they were ready to start phase 3 trials, both diseases had burned out. No disease equals nobody buying a vaccine equals no investment in phase 3 trials where you give the candidate to tens of thousands of people, pay all of them, and monitor all of them for both safety and efficacy.
In fact, some of the candidates for SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are just SARS-CoV-1 vaccines they pulled off the shelf and tweaked to work for SARS-CoV-2. President Trump says we’re very close. Some manufacturers have stated they may have limited doses available of candidates in testing in September or October. Multiple candidates are in the middle of phase 3 trials right now with very promising results.
In 1960, zero men had gone to space. In 1961, the first one made it. Since then, hundreds of others (566) have done it. There’s always a first. I wouldn’t make the mistake of underestimating President Trump. Plenty of others have done that time and time again and always been proven wrong. If he says we’re close, you can bet it’s about to happen.
I hope he is NUMBER ONE. The man is a Dr. Mengele, only younger.
Emanuel is a loser, but I think Jonathan Gruber was the “Death Panel Guy”. I could be wrong, however.

“This drug has the very real side effect of keeping you alive, and then you’d still be alive in this horrible place where Trump is the president of the country,” said Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. “It’s impossible to overstate just how deadly and dangerous this president’s rhetoric is as he tries to get people to take this drug and make them stay alive under his cruel, totalitarian, tyrannical reign.”
“We cannot allow this to happen — do not take hydroxychloroquine! Then you can die peacefully of COVID-19 and fade into the sweet, sweet bliss of death where you will never remember that Trump was ever president.”

That's incorrect. The number is actually about 99.73%. Let's explore why.
The US population stands at about 330 million people. Of those, 2.2 million had been identified as having been infected with SARS-CoV-2 as of June 17th (the data I have on deaths and hospitalizations broken down by age group is all from June). The CDC director stated that number could be as much as 10 times higher, so let's assume 22 million in total had been infected across the US at that time, or about 7.3% of the US population. If we look only at deaths (when COVID-19 was clearly not harmless), we see that 26 children ages 0-14 died due to COVID-19 between Feb 1 and June 17 (https://www.acsh.org/news/2020/06/23/coronavirus-covid-deaths-us-age-race-14863). 125 deaths between the ages of 15 and 24. 699 deaths between the ages of 25 and 34. 1,780 deaths between the ages of 35 and 44. And 4,976 deaths between the ages of 45 and 54. The next group overruns into the over 60 group, so we'll ignore them for this. That's 7,606 deaths for Americans age 0 - 54. Their total population is 232 million. If 7.3% have contracted the virus, that's 16,936,000 who had been infected as of that date. That's 0.045% who died from COVID-19 and 99.955% who contracted the virus and at least survived it. If it were actually "harmless" to "99.99999%", the number of deaths would be 2 (1.69). But it's actually 7,606, which is higher than 2. A lot higher. About 4,500 times higher than the expected number given your percentage.
But even that isn't covering everyone harmed. Most reasonable people would say that if you're hospitalized for an illness, it's not "harmless". So let's look at hospitalizations as well. For kids 0-17, we had 2,180 hospitalizations due to COVID-19 as of June 13th (https://www.statista.com/statistics/1122354/covid-19-us-hospital-rate-by-age/). 17,320 for people ages 18-39. 18,100 for people ages 40-49. The next group is 50-64, so since that overruns your <60, we'll ignore the whole group even though we know (from the deaths totals) that we're missing a pretty large number there. So that's 37,600 persons ages 0-49 hospitalized due to COVID-19. Population of persons age 0-49 is 212 million. 7.3% infected gives us 15,476,000 persons. That puts us at 0.24% of infected persons from ages 0-49 who wound up hospitalized. Given your "99.99999%" number, that should again be 2 (1.55 now since we're excluding the 50-54 age group). The reality is it's 24,258 times higher than that.
Those are facts. They may not fit your narrative, but they are the reality of the situation. You may not like them, but they exist in the real world nonetheless.
