In his first official press briefing on the coronavirus pandemic since April, President Trump on Tuesday admitted that the public health crisis is likely to worsen as cases surge across the country and asked all Americans to wear masks in public.
While Trump hailed his administration’s response to the pandemic and the work toward developing a vaccine, he bluntly disclosed what many Americans already know: that the crisis is likely to spread more before it can be contained.
“It will get worse before it gets better,” Trump said of the pandemic that has infected close to 4 million Americans. “That’s something I don’t like saying but it is.”
Trump’s comments come after weeks where he either downplayed the virus’ continued spread or focused on other issues – from unrest over racial injustice in American cities to the removal of Confederate statues – despite cases of COVID-19 surging, particularly, in parts of the south and southwest.
Noting the concerns among many of his supporters that facial coverings impinge on their personal freedoms, Trump pleaded with Americans to wear masks out in public to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.
“We’re asking everybody when you’re not able to socially distance to wear a mask,” Trump said.

I’m not following you. Masks don’t imprison or hinder employment.
Previous posts have suggested political strategies behind Trump’s mask statement. Additionally, I think he’s doing what he thinks is best for the country, and I think he’s a wise, honest leader and I trust him.

In MA where masks are required I know one grocery chain that generally refuses to enforce it, besides putting up a sign by the door.

I haven’t seen anyone in my liberal, Ultra-Blue state being told to wear a mask when they are ‘out for a walk’ - or censured for NOT wearing one. It’s only required in public buildings and privately-owned businesses.

There will be no blue wave. President Trump will announce approval of a safe and effective vaccine shortly before the election and turn this whole game on its head.
The people will be given a choice in the election between the hero who brought an end to COVID-19 by giving us the fastest vaccine in human history or Joe Biden, who doesn’t know where he is or what he’s doing half the time. I don’t even think most Democrats will bother showing up to the polls. Only the most hardcore leftists will vote against the President under those circumstances. Everyone in the middle will be so grateful to the President for ending this nightmare that they’ll be all too happy to re-elect him.

Evidence IMO shows the plateau in the US will be over in 7 to 10 days.
And Trump will call for more “opening” then, and celebrate the news.
The Wuhan Virus (which everyone, including China, used to call it) has been worse here than he or I expected.
But nothing lasts forever.
I actually think “it will get worse before it gets better” is expectations management. The virus itself is unlikely to get worse. When it doesn’t Trump will take a victory lap.

Cliff’s Notes: SARS-CoV-2 vaccine is being tested the same as other vaccines. President Trump just got rid of all the Federal bureaucracy that normally holds things up for years. And he convinced them to manufacture it DURING safety trials, which NOBODY has ever done before because it’s such a huge risk. That’s why it’s so fast. All the same testing as normal is happening. Just no more red tape.
