During a passionate two-hour ESPN college football conference call last month to discuss race following the death of George Floyd, there were riveting and emotional testimonials from on- and off-air people as hundreds listened.
About a half-hour in, as ESPNs Maria Taylor discussed the issue and her experience, a play-by-play man for the network, Dave LaMont, could be heard in the background, apparently thinking his phone was on mute.
LaMont described the nature of the call on race as venting, which stunned those listening and immediately caused a rebuke from Taylor, who warned there could be ramifications if he did not stop.
He quickly did, but it might have cost him his job.
ESPN has explored letting LaMont go even after he admitted the mistake immediately following the call to his bosses.

When a black person is talking you have to shut-up, listen, and take everything they say seriously.
Failure to keep your opinions to yourself can and will cost you your job. Apologizing and groveling will not save your career.
Lie down with dogs....
Saying they were “venting” is grounds to be shut up and fired?
“Yes Massa” and “No Massa” are the allowed phrases. You are not permitted to say anything else. An opinion about “venting” is totally forbidden.
Heres a Russian joke from the Brezhnev era. Ive told it here before, but evidently Dave LaMont missed it the first time around.
Foreign reporter: What is your opinion on farm collectivization?
Soviet citizen: I agree with the policy of the party.
Foreign reporter: What is your opinion on the steel production goals?
Soviet citizen: I agree with the policy of the party.
Foreign reporter: Dont you have any opinions of your own?
Soviet citizen: Yes. But I dont agree with them.
GTH ESPN.
No sympathy for this snowflake. First sign to look for...do they apologize for saying what they actually think.
If they do...they’re not worth the effort.
I’m so upset that some millionaire might lose his media job on one network and have to have his agent find him a job on another network.
Give me a f’in break.
They need to put some good old Italian Americans born in the 50’s and 60’s on TV, turn off the censor rules, and let these leftist idiots be dealt with.
I long ago decided these people are so out of line that civil and intellectual debate with them is an imposition.
They need to be told to get the F out of your face. Really, do they deserve anything else?
This is the “conversation” they want, where you get fired for thinking? And the only one standing up proud on his two legs like a man is our president.
News flash for these jerks: Sports shouldn’t have a damn thing to do with this marxist racial nonsense.
When you’re supposed to be muted cause it’s somebody else’s turn. And depending on what you say while you’re supposed to be muted. Hot mikes are dangerous. Wouldn’t be the first, won’t be the last.
The “Party” would not like your joke, Comrade, but I do!
Screw them, supposed to be muted or not. They don’t want to hear anything.
He should go on offensive, if all is lost. If I get fired for my opinion, it proves there is NO systemic racism. If there were she would be fired.
Just about the 9,346,217th lesson in why it is great to be a free agent - self-employed professional with no HR department, no diversity training, no kow-towing to groups like BLM. Do not know this Lamont fellow, but ESPN is imploding from lack of revenue - he might have been about to lose his position anyway.
The ridiculous level of sensitivity engendered by race issues leads non-blacks to withhold comment on these issues for obvious reasons. Not sure how much credibility blacks place in the opinion and observations of non-blacks, but it couldn’t hurt to listen to more perspectives.
This is like discussing Chicago crime statistics during a conference call in my office about a railroad bridge design project in a Rocky Mountain state. Who gives a sh!t about it?
I've never heard of Dave LaMont, never heard of Maria Taylor (is she related to Lawrence Taylor?), and I haven't watched ESPN in years.
In this case they don’t want to broadcast it. It’s still their airwaves, and their call. Nothing new about getting busted for a hot mike. Only interesting thing is how long this is taking. He’s either doing a really good job of groveling, or a real crap job of letting it blow over.
This sounds like a pretty weak ‘hot mike’ incident.
