Jonah Goldberg: Mitt Romney is owed an apology
Post-Gazette ^ | June 11 2020 | Jonah Goldberg

Posted on 06/17/2020 12:54:16 PM PDT by rintintin

“Romney didn’t win, did he?”

That was former Senate Democratic majority leader Harry Reid’s response to whether he regretted lying about then-GOP presidential nominee — and now Utah senator — Mitt Romney.

Mr. Reid accused Mr. Romney on the Senate floor in 2012, when he was running for president, of not having paid any taxes in four years. It was absolutely untrue and was discredited by Washington Post fact-checkers and others at the time. But that didn’t stop the onslaught of unfair and inaccurate accusations and innuendos.

The Mitt Romney who ran for president in 2012 went on to vote for conviction in President Trump’s impeachment trial. And that same Mr. Romney became the first known Republican senator to march with the George Floyd protesters over the weekend.

You remember 2012, right? That was the year of the last presidential election before Donald Trump’s victory. And the way liberals attacked Mr. Romney’s presidential campaign on opinion pages of newspapers, news broadcasts and in the media echo chamber of blue check-mark Twitter, has a lot to do with how the next election went — and how this one will go. Their treatment of Mr. Romney was an inflection point for many on the right.

He’s owed something, but it isn’t an apology.

I think Romney is positioning himself for leadership after the Trump era. He believes Trump is in deep sh*t politically, may not win re-election, and there is nothing to be gained by staying loyal to a failing cause. He sees himself as staying above the fray, letting others bloody themselves in the nasty ugly campaign to come. I find Romney not to my liking but this is what I think he’s doing. It may be a good move for him. We will see.

Jonah was at one time a person I had high hopes for.

Wow, he’s just out of it.

JarJar Fatberg is an insufferable prig.

I think Romney is positioning himself for leadership after the Trump era.

Probably - but the Reeking Pile of Rotting Mitt doesn't understand that the Game is up.

Trump has revealed that the Republicans are The Loyal Opposition who are in it for the paycheck - not to actually accomplish any actual goals of the true conservatives.

The true conservatives gave their votes to the Republicans for many years to hold off the crazed bozoclowns of the Left.

When Perot came along in 1992, you saw the size of the conservative contigent - about 10-15% of the electorate.

After Trump, if the Uniparty is successful, I'm NEVER voting for a Pubbie again - and I'll try to convince as many like-minded people to do the same.

As conservatives, we need actual targets - just like the Lefty mob.

This might be accurate but we won’t have a Republican Party if Trump loses anyway

You were on to "The Loyal Opposition" to the Uniparty before a lot of us were.

They're in it for the paycheck - not to win.

That's why pieces of Mitt like John Roberts sell us out in a New York minute.

Jonah Goldberg can go shove it. He’s a tool bag. Anyone who defends Mittens is an enemy in my book.

The 2012 field was weak. The 2008 GOP field was, too, but the cookie crumbled Juan McCain’s way. It was reasonable from Mitts point of view to hope that his claim of solving healthcare would be a plus.

Yes indeed. I left the GOP’ers after NAFTA and free trade. Now I’ll walk over broken glass to vote for DJT, but the rest of them can go to blazes.

So Jonah isn’t specifically named here, though the AEI is (as is the National Review Institue, Heritage Foundation, Grovwr Norquist, etc.)

I noticed John Stossel had a piece defending Google this week as well.

Of course Harry Reid lied. His 2010 opponent should have pointed out how much he likes transvestite prostitutes and meth, which would have had at least an equal chance of being true as anything Reid has ever said in his miserable life.

F Romney though. Why is Goldberg writing about this old news? Nothing more topical he can think of? Just can’t resist slobbering on Romney?

“ Of course Harry Reid lied. ”

How do you know? You still in Romney-defense mode, left over from 2012? What did Romney ever do to earn that kind of automatic loyalty trust and defense from you?

Why do you assume Romney paid taxes?

There are many ways for the wealthy to shrink their taxes. Bezos doesn’t pay much, or so I’ve read.

I don’t assume that Romney paid taxes. Not saying he broke any laws, it’s just that I don’t reflexively take his side on a controversy just because he’s a Republican and Reid is a Democrat

I would send Romney into the center of the Sun if I could.

I know Reid lied because

A) It was determined he lied as a fact (you think the WApost would debunked it if it was TRUE!?) and he even tacitly admitted he lied with his response when questioned.

B) He’s a democrat mob lawyer pig, if he tells the truth ever it’s an accident.

Romney is a POS but you don’t have to make him worse than he actually is by putting stock in BS attacks democrats used against him. F whatever any democrat claims. I’d sooner hear the Taliban’s opinion than Harry Reid’s.

I take the dog thing more seriously than his taxes (I am all in favor of tax-dodging BTW, that money is wasted), poor puppy up on that roof.
