Supreme Court rules federal civil rights law protects LGBT workers

Washington — The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that it is illegal for an employer to fire someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, delivering a major victory in the fight for civil rights for LGBT people.

The court's 6-3 ruling extends the scope of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which bars discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin and religion, to include LGBT people. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Neil Gorsuch, who authored the majority's opinion, joined the liberal wing of the bench in ruling that "an employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender violates Title VII."

Private businesses should be able to hire, fire, and serve any person they choose based on any reason they choose. Only government should be covered by anti-discrmination laws. We have lost freedom of association and government is now controlling our lives and businesses.

But even in your example, the “harm” is only conceptual. That’s not a good enough reason to oppress someone. You say yourself you have no issue if they want to have an orgy.

Plenty of people rear children outside of marriage. Many single people adopt children. I at least 2 single women that have adopted kids. No one cared. But a single guy or two guys and all hell is raised.

Your argument about government being involved is valid. But just as valid as me saying to you that your view shouldn’t be regulating either.

One of the main justifications of the South’s for the Civil War was not just slavery but the overall concept of State’s rights. Live and let live, they would say. Now that’s no longer valued when those values don’t align with yours, or the majorities? Then it’s “live and let live” as long as you’re like minded.

I’d lay dollars to donuts you’ll go on living your happy life, wherever you live, and rarely meet, let alone have your life impacted by a gay person. That’s just my gut.

Anyway, thanks for the discussion and at least engaging and listening while not personally insulting me too much. I know 99% of people on this site think the same way about most issues but a degree of open mindedness isn’t a bad thing from time to time.

Maybe accepting a different view point doesn’t make you a liberal, gay loving, yellow bellied, commie. Breathe brother...

We’re way beyond just plain old gays now.

This ruling also extends to the “transgender” myth. What this means is that mentally ill men who want to be women can now put on a dress, or mutilate their body, and they HAVE to be teachers, nurses, child care workers, etc.

This is indeed a great victory for radical homosexual activists who will use it as a hammer to further Balkanize this country.

They don’t call the GOP the Surrender Party for nothing. Never a reason to stand your ground. Never a reason to have core beliefs worth fighting for. The last 30 years have shown us that GOP is a fake party with a fake agenda. This SCOTUS ruling proves once again there is no opposition party to the progressive agenda. No doubt McConnell and the rest of the GOPe are popping champagne corks today and thanking the Roberts court for taking this social issue hot potato off their Made In China plates.

So back to the 50s and 60s when blacks could be refused service simply because of their skin color?

Correct. You are more qualified to serve on the Court than Gorsuch. He’s now a judicial activist, amending laws that are within Congress’s purview to amend.

The harm isn’t conceptual - it’s like a cancer that destroys society and laws from within as the social strata now try to vie for who’s more victimized than the others.

That’s called cancel culture.

It’s just at the moment you approve of whose being cancelled but the guns are already turning on yourselves like JK Rowling and wrongthink now rules the day.

The more you create laws and social strata that are divorced from reality the more of this nonsense you’ll get and it will snowball until civilization collapses.

That’s what it means to yoke yourself to Gods truth.

Maybe it’s some of the “WE” that have left the GOP? Maybe it’s some of the “WE” that have drifted so far RIGHT that our aspirations can no longer comport with a sensible majority?

We came out of the cave. We looked over the mountain. We crossed ocean. We went into space. Humanity is destined to evolve. Sometimes the unwilling are left behind. Sometimes they’re right and sometimes not. On both sides. But the reluctance to do so out of nothing more than dogma is too limiting. Too “that’s the way we’ve always done it”.... That sort of thinking gets people fired quickly in business.... we should always be trying to improve.

So back in the 2010’s when the Boy Scouts could keep homos out of boys tents? Are you progressive Democrat by chance? You sure talk like one.

Yes, private entities must be free to do what they want. Jim Crow laws were government. Those laws should not have been allowed, but if private business did not want to serve anyone for any reason, it must be allowed. Anything else is tyranny.

As black economists Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams point out, there is a cost to discrimination. If a business does not want to serve blacks, whites, women, or people with long hair, there will be several businesses just down the street that will be happy to take those customers.

Except you know, or at least should know, that will never happen. Racism isn’t ok. (irrespective of current events)

Gross oppression isn’t ok simply because it’s been institutionalized. That’s Islam right there.

We are better than that. Way better.

WE elected Donald Trump. The immediate past GOP POTUS nominee and the sitting GOP Senate Judiciary committee chairman defacto supported Hillary Criminal and her progressive SCOTUS in 2016.

The GOP left us to the benefit of Democrats like Hillary. “We” didn’t leave the GOP.

I don’t disagree that opportunity cost isn’t real. But we are way beyond that.

Kowtowing is NOT improving.
Giving up your land to appease an insurrection is not improving.
This is why socialism always dies.

Bullshit

You're right!

The problem is they've been serving up these warm bowls of $HIT for some time now and people have now grown accustomed to eating them without complaint.

About the only way I can see to offset this is for EVERY NORMAL person to now CLAIM that they are GAY or TRANSGENDER or BISEXUAL.

After all.. the "law is the law" and if you CLAIM you're GAY or TRANSGENDER or BISEXUAL who are they to prove otherwise? You got rights because it's the LAW!

“For their women exchanged their natural function for an unnatural and abnormal one,

And the men also turned from natural relations with women and were set ablaze (burning out, consumed) with lust for one another—men committing shameful acts with men and suffering in their own bodies and personalities the inevitable consequences and penalty of their wrong-doing and going astray, which was [their] fitting retribution.”

The Court sessions wraps up in June. Major cases are often saved for the end of the term.
