16 elk killed after haystack collapses

Sixteen elk died sometime during the winter at an eastern Idaho wildlife management area when a stack of hay containing 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) bales collapsed and fell, crushing some of the elk and causing others to be trampled to death.

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game said Saturday that it appears the elk broke through a high fence and ate at the bottom of the haystack, causing it to collapse.

The haystack is on the Tex Creek Wildlife Management Area about 15 miles east of Idaho Falls.

Fish and Game officials investigated after receiving a report from a concerned citizen.

The hay was leftover from an emergency feeding of elk in 2016 following a large wildfire that destroyed the elk's usual forage.

Fish and Game said they plan to remove the remaining hay this summer.

The elk carcasses were removed from the site and left for scavengers.

Article says these were 2,000 pounds. Elk ate from the bottom of the pile.

I think an “Elk Feeding Training” project is needed to teach them to eat from the top of the pile.

Round may not be a good idea.

But it does make it easier for the stock to get dinner...

The toxic nature of those particular carcasses though would present a danger to wildlife and local water quality.

It gives real relevance to the phrase my Granddad used to say: “Its like looking for an elk in a haystack.”

Or something like that, I can’t recall exactly….

I thought I read about a semi-famous person in the UK being killed by a round bale that rolled into a roadway and I was right.

Wow.. all that meat gone to waste..

Our bales were the smaller twine tied ones, you learned how to stack them so they didn’t fall over..

These big round fellars wouldn’t likely stack as well.

square v. round? the debate goes on.. except for the recent elk victims.

No danger at all. Nature is designed perfectly to take care of such a situation, even down to the bones. Only threat to water quality is if the animals die in an active drainage. Full grown cow only lasts about 3 days around here before the predators have it stripped to the bone.

The elk were playing Jenga...and they all lost. Moral of the story...don’t eat from the bottom of a stack of bales.

Well, there goes some poor hunter's elk stand unless, of course, the hunter was on top of the stack at the time. If by chance a ladder is found next to the stack someone should search for a hunter's carcass, as well. Respectfully, Lawrence Elk 🦌🦌🦌🦌
