New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Wednesday ordered that all New York City subway cars be cleaned every night by Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) workers to ensure the safety of essential personnel during the coronavirus pandemic.
Any essential worker who shows up and gets on a train should know that that train was disinfected the night before, Cuomo told reporters at his daily coronavirus press briefing.
Letting them endanger their own life and endanger the lives of others is not helping anyone, Cuomo said.
The governor said that he wants the MTA to present to him a plan for the nightly cleanings by Thursday.
Its realistic. Its an essential. How realistic is it? Whats the alternative?" Cuomo said when asked if the state would provide funding to the MTA for the cleaning.
He also commented on reports of the deteriorating state of subway cars during the crisis as the city has allowed homeless people to stay on the cars with their belongings.
"No one wants to live their lives on a subway train," Cuomo said. "We have a higher obligation as a society than to say 'OK, you can sleep in a subway car.'"

“Every night ... wow, that will help.”
It will be reinfected all over again as soon as the next passenger boards.
Can see chained gangs of star wearing laborers scrubbing the trains chanting: “Work is setting us free”.
Petula Clark is in for a rough surprise....
That is going to be as helpful as spitting on a forest fire.
Sanitation craze commenced.
If they haven’t been doing this for months it serious criminal negligence.
If they are starting this now it is crazy and criminal.
It’ll still be ignored.
But the subway drove the NYC epidemic.
Cuomo and Deblasio did everything wrong.
What? WHAT? He’s just now doing this? No wonder there’s so many cases in NYC.
Ridership is down 90%. So not terribly crowded. Added trains, so every train is now an 8-car train, they used to run 6-car trains except for rush hour, and there’s not much rush hour since federal workers are all “working” from home.
I read one report that said the cleaning schedule was once every 72 hours for the trains and every 24 hours for the stations.
My god, with “leaders” like this,we are so screwed and people voted for this POS and will AGAIN.
“We cut the hours, and cut the number of runs per hour, to force people to find other transportation.”
That actually is a mistake NYC also made.
They should have maximized service in terms if trains and hours to decrease rider density as much as possible.
That said, DC was lower in deaths relative to other cities with high volume mass transit.
One would have thought that they woiuld be doing that already (as in for DECADES), but apparently not.
“””New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) on Wednesday ordered that all New York City subway cars be cleaned every night by Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) workers to ensure the safety of essential personnel during the coronavirus pandemic”””
F the passengers.
What’s your hurry, Andy?
“Require everyone to stay 6 feet apart, lacking that everyone will have to wear a hazmat suit. Only one person per elevator car. Yes this will work!”
6 feet only works if there’s movement of either the air or the people. Masks are the only other option that works, as proven in Taiwan and now South Korea.
You mean they’ve not always been cleaned daily? Gross!
They are toilets for the homeless
I’ve never been to NYC, and I never hope to be there. Upstate is lovely.
The subway trains are now home to the homeless, gonna ship them to the nursing homes too?
