Last Post - click
Come home! Come home! The last post is sounding for you to hear. All good soldiers know very well there is nothing to fear while they do what is right, and forget all the worries they have met in their duties through the year. A soldier cannot always be great, but he can be a gentleman and he can be a right good pal to his comrades in his squad. So all you soldiers listen to this - Deal fair by all and youll never be amiss.

ANZAC War Memorial, Sydney, Australia
Anzac Day is commemorated by Australia and New Zealand on 25 April every year to remember members of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who landed at Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I. Anzac Day is also observed in the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tonga. It is no longer observed as a national holiday in Samoa.
Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. The acronym ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, whose soldiers were known as Anzacs. The pride they took in that name endures to this day, and Anzac Day remains one of the most important national occasions of both Australia and New Zealand.
When war broke out in 1914, Australia had been a Federal Commonwealth for only thirteen years. In 1915, Australian and New Zealand soldiers formed part of an Allied expedition that set out to capture the Gallipoli Peninsula to open the way to the Black Sea for the Allied navies. The plan was to capture Istanbul, capital of the Ottoman Empire and an ally of Germany. The ANZAC force landed at Gallipoli on 25 April, meeting fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders. What had been planned as a bold strike to knock Turkey out of the war quickly became a stale-mate, and the campaign dragged on for eight months. At the end of 1915, the Allied forces were evacuated after both sides had suffered heavy casualties and endured great hardships. Over 8,000 Australian and 2,700 New Zealand soldiers died. News of the landing at Gallipoli made a profound impact on Australians and New Zealanders at home and 25 April quickly became the day on which they remembered the sacrifice of those who had died in war.
Though the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives of capturing Istanbul and knocking Turkey out of the war, the Australian and New Zealand troops' actions during the campaign bequeathed an intangible but powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as an "Anzac legend" became an important part of the national identity in both countries. This shaped the ways they viewed both their past and their future.

Australian poet Banjo Paterson wrote the words to "Waltzing Matilda" in January 1895 while staying at Dagworth Station, a sheep and cattle station near Winton in Central West Queensland owned by the Macpherson family. The words were written to a tune played on a zither or autoharp by 31‑year‑old Christina Macpherson, one of the family members at the station. Waltzing Matilda - click

Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free; Weve golden soil and wealth for toil; Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in natures gifts Of beauty rich and rare; In historys page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair. In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross Well toil with hearts and hands; To make this Commonwealth of ours Renowned of all the lands; For those whove come across the seas Weve boundless plains to share; With courage let us all combine To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair.

April 23The Saddest Goose
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 Why is there a football in the parking lot? I wondered. But as I got closer, I realized the greyish lump wasnt a football: it was a
goosethe saddest Canada goose Id ever seen.
Geese often congregate on the lawn near my workplace in the spring and fall. But today there was only one, its neck arced back and its head tucked beneath a wing. Where are your buddies? I thought. Poor thing was all alone. It looked so lonely, I wanted to give it a hug. (Note: dont try this.)
Ive rarely seen a goose completely alone like my lonesome feathered friend. Geese are notably communal, flying in a V-formation to deflect the wind. Theyre made to be together.
As human beings, we were created for community too (see Genesis 2:18). And in Ecclesiastes 4:10, Solomon describes how vulnerable we are when were alone: Pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Theres strength in numbers, he added, for though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken (v. 12).
This is just as true for us spiritually as it is physically. God never intended for us to fly alone, vulnerably isolated. We need relationships with each other for encouragement, refreshment, and growth (see also 1 Corinthians 12:21). During these extraordinary days, due to the Covid-19 virus many of us have needed to practice physical distancing to help contain the disease. But how we look forward to the time we can meet face-to-face with our local church families again!
Together, we can stand firm when lifes headwinds gust our way. Together.
By: Adam R. Holz
Reflect & Pray
What kinds of circumstances tempt you to go it alone? Who do you know who could use a word of encouragement from you?
Loving God, help us to remember that You never meant us to fly solo, but together with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Today, help us to see and support someone in need of encouragement.

I just recently stumbled upon "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" on youtube. To call it powerful would be a huge understatement. As bad as WWII was it seems to me that WWI was even worse...at least for the Brits and the Aussies.I read once that on a *single* day of battle during WWI there were something like 20,000 men killed.
Kinda makes you stop and think.

They wont be able to commemorate their dead on ANZAS Day in NZ this year they are still on lockdown though from level 4 to level 3 this week...

-When I was a visiting professor Istanbul, back in 1992, during a university holiday I took a guided tour to Gallipoli. It happened to coincide with ANZAC Days. The site was crowded with Aussie and NZ tourists. I had a chance to talk with descendants of the Aussie troops who had fought there. To stand at the bottom of the cliff, which the ANZACs had to climb, with Johnny Turk holding the top of the cliff, was a very impressive moment. That took guts and persistence.

Thank you for this.
If there's a trip one way, he said,
Into battle grim for me,
Don't let them say when I am dead:
He died to save democracy;
Nor let them say: He fought to free
Enslaved nations, white or brown;
Just print these simple words for me:
He would not let his cobbers down.

The plan here in Australia is for people to go with candles to the end of their driveways at 6.00am for a ‘Dawn Service’ lining the streets of Australia.

“I just recently stumbled upon “And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” on youtube.”
This song is considered by many Vietnam Vets as their Anthem.
...
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind and the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And when the ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where me legs used to be
And thank Christ there was no one there waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the Band played Waltzing Matilda
When they carried us down the gangway
Oh nobody cheered, they just stood there and stared
Then they turned all their faces away

Got to go to Sydney for 5 days for R&R in 1968. It was quite a shock going form Jungle to Civilization.
It was in the 60s today but the snow is not all gone yet. Everything is turning green. Maybe Winter will end.
