Kinda makes you stop and think.
“I just recently stumbled upon “And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” on youtube.”
This song is considered by many Vietnam Vets as their Anthem.
...
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The armless, the legless, the blind and the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And when the ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where me legs used to be
And thank Christ there was no one there waiting for me
To grieve and to mourn and to pity
And the Band played Waltzing Matilda
When they carried us down the gangway
Oh nobody cheered, they just stood there and stared
Then they turned all their faces away
Good evening, GSC...it IS sobering to think about. And if you do, it does give one pause.
Which version? I like The Pogues version the best.
The New Seekers in 1994 Fantastic Aussie group, rousing music
Served alongside with the Diggers and Kiwi's in Vietnam in Tet '68, you couldn't ask for a better bunch to fight beside.
The battle you are referring to was The battle Of The Somme, July 1, 1916. It was single worst day in terms of losses the British Army ever suffered. The losses were around 30,000 with about half that number killed. Entire villages and small towns throughout Britain and entire neighborhoods in the major cities had their entire male populations between the ages of 18 to 30 wiped out.
The young men were encouraged to join up together in what
were known as ‘’pals battalions’’, they would be units composed of all the men and boys from schools, factories and neighborhoods serving together. They served together and died together.
