WASHINGTON - Nearly 60 percent of American voters say they are more concerned that a relaxation of stay-at-home restrictions would lead to more COVID-19 deaths than they are that those restrictions will hurt the U.S. economy, according to a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
But while strong majorities of Democrats and independents are more worried about the coronavirus than the economy, Republicans are divided on the question, with almost half of them more concerned about how the restrictions could affect the economy.
In the poll, 58 percent of registered voters say that what worries them more is that the United States will move too quickly in loosening stay-at-home restrictions, resulting in the coronavirus spreading and more lives being lost.
Thats compared with 32 percent who are more concerned that the U.S. will take too long in loosening restrictions, which will harm the economy.
McInturff, the GOP pollster, says these numbers represent a powerful signal that the country isnt ready for business as usual on May 1.
Also in the poll, 44 percent of voters say they approve of Trumps handling of the coronavirus, while 52 percent disapprove.
Thats essentially unchanged from March, when 45 percent gave the president a thumbs up.
By comparison, 69 percent say they trust the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; 66 percent trust their own governor; 60 percent trust Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nations top infectious disease expert; 46 percent trust New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; and 35 percent trust Vice President Mike Pence.
The numbers for Joe Biden, the apparent Democratic presidential nominee, are 26 percent who trust, 29 percent who dont trust, and 42 percent who arent aware of his coronavirus statements or who dont have an opinion.

Half the respondents are likely women. Women, and their dimocrat men followers, prioritize safety, security and comfort over the more manly values, activities and virtues.
Id like to see a breakdown of the income/employment situation of those 60%.

You’ll never see it. Facts are dangerous things that interfere with agendas.
It doesn’t surprise that 58% are happy to sit on their butt collecting checks.
Hey....neither is slo-jo!
This has become an all too familiar pattern. Monday-Friday the more rational heads prevail in the news cycle. Talk of collateral damage being deeper than the virus, other experts, true talk of total patient population, talk of Chinas criminal action, talk of a balanced plan to open up while social distancing, etc. These directly fly in the face of the media doom and gloom fear narrative.
Then, the weekend comes and the media tries to clawback what it has lost. We get polls and the Sunday Morning crew pimping whatever get Trump narrative that the Dems want to float this week.
And so the media continues its pitching endless lockdown. May I note that even Bill Maher is onto its. What the media is blissfully unawares of is that the left wing constituencies are staring to feel the pain. No Hollywood productions, Universities furloughing all staff, athletes having their pay withheld, and on and on.
In short, the perpetual shutdown to get Trump crew is losing this battle BIGLY. And not because of Trump pushing re-opening but because their lefty governors in NY and NJ are starting to realize that no Federal bailout of their states is imminent.
As for the poll, I have always theorized that if the democrat party adopted burning kittens and puppies alive as a policy plank, the media would cook up a poll showing overwhelming support.
Theory no more.
I call BS.
The opinions at MSN.com were surprisingly like the opinions on this FR posted poll.
How can people not understand that if we do not go back to work very soon, there will be NO health care system to prevent or treat COVID-19?
My guess - a solid majority of American citizens think the US Treasury can just print more money, and everything will be fine.
I also think a lot of people really enjoy the time off.
With the unfunded Baby Boomer bill for Medicare and Social Security coming due over the next ten years, this pandemic hysteria could not have hit at a worse time.
It is likely this sample are retired folks with a pension of some kind and are in the high risk age group.
If $600 becomes worth $60 in a short period of time, it won’t be just the unemployed who will be in for a rude awakening. Those who saved for retirement and are retired would be screwed.
I have an old foreign who works for the FDA. Even before the virus she was able to work from home four days a week. The one day she is supposed to go into the office she frequently doesnt because she is working from her second home in the country. She makes about three times the average American salary.
She is relatively young. This whole thing is having no impact on her other than that her kids are home more.
+. lol....
Polling, once removed....
” Also, isolation itself is unhealthy and harmful in many ways.”
Exactly.
Dont you feel better when you are outside? Being cooped up is unhealthy and people require exercise or movement. Not only that, people who STILL did not get their checks (like me) need to make the rent. mortgage etc.
And yet somehow, in your fear-dominated brain, it is NOT selfish of you to want to keep everyone else under house arrest to assuage your irrational fears.
Most of us have had enough of living like cowering little girls. Go back to hiding under your bed.
There ought to be a law suspending all government employee paychecks when the country is shut down. They are not doing their job if the country is out of business.
The streets of Lansing, Michigan say otherwise.
Survey needs to employed versus unemployed.
And those 60% are still being paid their regular salary, so why wouldn’t they want to keep it in place? But be assured if they lose their job they will be the first ones to complain that the stay-at-home orders were over the top and responsible for their job loss, not them and their desire to ride the gravy train with loads of time off.
This invisible disease is destroying the invisible hand.
Well Nancy, let’s see.
Since a good portion of your money comes from your winery operation, how does the shutdown impact you? All of your pruning took place in November/December before the crisis and your grapes won’t be ready to be picked until September. So the only labor cost you have is the occasional spraying (if you do spray), the operation of your tasting room, and since alcohol sales are considered an “essential industry” no problems there.
Your grapes from last year have already been processed and are in barrels, so minimal labor there. Your bottling operation is probably automated so moving wine from storage to bottling is a minimal operation.
And of course you still have money flowing in from your off-shore tuna operation, your husband’s real estate business, and if all else fails, there’s that nice fat check courtesy of the US taxpayer.
Yep, I can see how sheltering in place is no big deal for you.
