WASHINGTON - Nearly 60 percent of American voters say they are more concerned that a relaxation of stay-at-home restrictions would lead to more COVID-19 deaths than they are that those restrictions will hurt the U.S. economy, according to a new national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
But while strong majorities of Democrats and independents are more worried about the coronavirus than the economy, Republicans are divided on the question, with almost half of them more concerned about how the restrictions could affect the economy.
In the poll, 58 percent of registered voters say that what worries them more is that the United States will move too quickly in loosening stay-at-home restrictions, resulting in the coronavirus spreading and more lives being lost.
That’s compared with 32 percent who are more concerned that the U.S. will take too long in loosening restrictions, which will harm the economy.
McInturff, the GOP pollster, says these numbers represent a “powerful signal” that the country isn’t ready for business as usual on May 1.
Also in the poll, 44 percent of voters say they approve of Trump’s handling of the coronavirus, while 52 percent disapprove.
That’s essentially unchanged from March, when 45 percent gave the president a thumbs up.
By comparison, 69 percent say they trust the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; 66 percent trust their own governor; 60 percent trust Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert; 46 percent trust New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo; and 35 percent trust Vice President Mike Pence.
The numbers for Joe Biden, the apparent Democratic presidential nominee, are 26 percent who trust, 29 percent who don’t trust, and 42 percent who aren’t aware of his coronavirus statements or who don’t have an opinion.

At the core of economic activity is human behavior. Like or not people are very frightened. Frightened people are not very productive but demand to be fed, clothed, kept warm or cooled, sheltered and treated for ailments. This is the Democrat’s brave new world come true.

This is so true. I live in the DC metro area and the elites around here are suggesting that we shouldn’t open until a vaccine is widely available. A journalist here suggested that the govt will just have to float everyone financially until then (he estimates 2-2.5 years!).
I am surprised and encouraged that even in blue states people are rising up against this insanity.
Their welfare checks and EBT cards are still active. So are their Obama phones.
People are being selfish to want out and it will take a toll.

You seem to emphasize the ‘cabin fever’ aspect this but many people are feeling significant financial stress and esperately want to get back out to work. Also, isolation itself is unhealthy and harmful in many ways.

I’d like to see a breakdown of the income/employment situation of those 60%. I bet most are retirees and the chronically unemployed/underemployed.

A large percentage of people in DC have government jobs. They don’t have to worry about their paychecks or benefits. They’re well taken care of.

MSM has one goal above others at this moment. Stop any opening anywhere. It would be so easy to rig this question to get this result. It is aimed at the Governors and it will be used all day today on the “news’ shows.

“My recommendation is that you stay hidden away from the rest of society until your favorite politician tells you — actually out of their benevolent mercy bestows upon you the permission you so desperately need from them and them alone — that you may leave your home and re-join society. Although when at some undefined future time when you do so, I expect you’ll need to cloak yourself in a burka and heavy gloves (that is, a portable security blanket to emulate the womb) and stay two, no, make it ten yards away from every other human being at least until such time as your irrational fear of this most recent flu virus subsides.
