Gov. Cuomo should temporarily shut down the NYC subways to help slam the brakes on the coronavirus outbreak, urge four City Council members.
We believe that drastic measures must be taken to stop the spread of COVID-19 in our transit system, the lawmakers Robert Holden, Eric Ulrich, Mark Gonaj and Peter Koo say in a letter to Cuomo.
With MTA workers still lacking protective gear, trains packed with passengers due to reduced service, and homeless people camping in the cars, the subways are fueling the crisis, the councilmen say.
MTA employees are going to work every day with woefully inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE). They are given one mask and one pair of gloves for an entire week while continuing to work among the filth of the subway, the letter says, citing complaints by TWU Local 100 members.
As a result, MTA workers are dying at a faster rate than any other front-line workers.
COVID-19 has killed 68 employees to date, spokeswoman Abbey Collins said Saturday. A total 2,496 workers have tested positive, and 4,365 are currently quarantined due to illness or exposure. Another 4,127 have returned to work after quarantines.

Too late.
Waaaaay too late.
Kind of late for that
I think NYC should stay on lockdown for a while. The liberals there need a good taste of the government they elected.
At a great cost, MTA workers will gain immunity by May. 68 workers dead is a huge sacrifice.
They’d just move to the buses.
I thought it was shut down 1 month ago. Shows what I know .
And somehow this will be Trump’s fault.
Perhaps it would be more effective to demand passports for internal travel and, say, a particular VISA to get from Manhattan to Brooklyn.
Tihe important thing is to remember that obedient subjects are safe subjects.
They've shut just about every productive business in that state down -- even in places where there are hardly any COVID-19 cases -- and yet the 'effing New York City subway is still running.
Nobody should wonder why there are more cases and deaths in the New York City metro area than in the rest of the country combined.
Agenda21 high-density urban transit community plans have just been nuked.
Subways? People spending time face to face from inches away? Hands grabbing the same metal all day long over and over? In enclosed cars?
That had to be the single largest contributor to spread, nice work. Even their “lock-downs are BS.
You’re from New York. Why do you think more hasn’t been done to protect subway passengers and staff? I suspect it’s because most of those passengers have no alternatives for transportation.
Yes. Day late, billion dollars short.
What the hell??? You mean all this time the subways have been running??? How irresponsible.
They should teach NY people how to drive like the rest of America does.
For people who look down their noses at the rubes out here, they really do stupid things to ruin their city.
