Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, issued a statewide stay-at-home order on Wednesday afternoon to curb the rate of infection in his state during the global coronavirus pandemic.
The order will go into effect at midnight Thursday and last for at least 30 days.
It makes sense to make this move now, the governor said during a press conference Wednesday, adding that he was taking the action after President Trump extended the social distancing guidelines nationwide for another 30 days.
DeSantis, who balked for weeks at issuing such an order, also changed his mind less than a day after receiving a letter from 13 Democratic members of Congress urging him to immediately issue a statewide stay-at-home order to save lives.
This pandemic has not respected global borders so it certainly will not respect county borders, the letter said. We cannot wait, we cannot leave this decision to county or municipal governments.
At least 33 states including California, New York, and Illinois, which are all home to some of the most densely populated major U.S. cities, have issued stay-at-home orders. Florida is the third most-populated state in the country, with about 21.6 million residents.
On Monday, DeSantis issued a safer at home order for four counties in South Florida, currently the hotspot of the outbreak in the state. Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties were ordered to stay at home until at least April 15th.
During a White House press briefing Tuesday, President Trump said he planned to call DeSantis to urge him to allow two Holland America cruise ships the MS Zaandam and MS Rotterdam to dock in the state. At least four people have died and more than 200 others have fallen ill with COVID-19 on one of the ships by Tuesday.

This is interesting because there a lot of confusion right now about what is essential. Some counties were doing a variation of this already. I’m not sure if this just means everything closed (except food places and what not).
That would be devastating.
This creates increased opportunities for Florida man stories.
One additional item to add to the infection chain...sheesh
“This creates increased opportunities for Florida Man stories.”
LOL, true!

Our local businesses were hanging on [until now], doing deliveries and outdoor curbside, and it really helped caregivers with taking care of the elderly to have curbside.
Who can afford delivery? My Dad’s alzheimer’s is so bad I cannot take advantage of the elder-hours to pick up supplies because he’s always sundowning, the only way to get him to sleep is to drive him around, which is no risk with him in the vehicle the whole time.
It’s all about voting online in November.
Im not doing any take out food, but they likely have an app via which you could pay. Chick-Fil-A certainly does, I used it before all the craziness.
No but the press has a major blind spot.
Walking, biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, running, and swimming are all specifically enumerated in the executive order as being allowed, as long as you are social distancing.
Are we sure this isn’t an April Fool’s?
BTW, my oldest daughter texted me about this about 30 mins ago. She lives in Jacksonville.
No more bubble parties? Marco Rubio deeply saddened.
I’m going fishing. The mahi run is just getting started.
‘it was a joke- lighten up-’
haven’t you heard...?jokes and flippant remarks are no longer appreciated by the populace at large; we must all go about with long and dour faces, and ready to scold the first person who raises an eyebrow about authoritarian dictates...
I bought two battery op scooters this week and we’ve been riding all over. 12 mile range at up to 15 MPH.
I think a certain prez’s well-known germophobia is being being exploited.
Gov. Ron DeSantis needs to tell the ship to drop off the few Americans on board then sail the ship to the next port of call (the next largest group) and drop them off... the damn ship is seaworthy right?
DeSantis can tell them they either do that OR he stops that line from EVER using any Florida ports.
