Florida's DeSantis issues statewide stay-at-home order to curb coronavirus

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, issued a statewide stay-at-home order on Wednesday afternoon to curb the rate of infection in his state during the global coronavirus pandemic.

The order will go into effect at midnight Thursday and last for at least 30 days.

“It makes sense to make this move now,” the governor said during a press conference Wednesday, adding that he was taking the action after President Trump extended the social distancing guidelines nationwide for another 30 days.

DeSantis, who balked for weeks at issuing such an order, also changed his mind less than a day after receiving a letter from 13 Democratic members of Congress urging him to “immediately issue a statewide stay-at-home order to save lives.”

“This pandemic has not respected global borders so it certainly will not respect county borders,” the letter said. “We cannot wait, we cannot leave this decision to county or municipal governments.”

At least 33 states including California, New York, and Illinois, which are all home to some of the most densely populated major U.S. cities, have issued stay-at-home orders. Florida is the third most-populated state in the country, with about 21.6 million residents.

On Monday, DeSantis issued a “safer at home” order for four counties in South Florida, currently the hotspot of the outbreak in the state. Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Monroe counties were ordered to stay at home until at least April 15th.

During a White House press briefing Tuesday, President Trump said he planned to call DeSantis to urge him to allow two Holland America cruise ships – the MS Zaandam and MS Rotterdam – to dock in the state. At least four people have died and more than 200 others have fallen ill with COVID-19 on one of the ships by Tuesday.

The order will go into effect at midnight Thursday and last for at least 30 days...

Wow.

So the onslaught here against dem governors doing this earlier...it just seems to be happening later in R states and now it will push this whole thing further into the future.

I RESPECT Rs for holding out until they felt they had to do this, but the beaches should have been closed to spring break kids in FL.

That’s not like getting back to work etc.

That’s just drunk kids possibly spreading it en masse and bringing it home to grandma and grandpa.

Did he issue the “shut everything down” version or are people still able to work?

So I’m ok to go to Walmart with the unwashed masses but taking a walk around the block is a no-go?

Funny how everyone blames the drunk kids but never mentions the big gay party down Miami-way.

Just the opposite, walking outside for exercise is OK, buy stay 6 feet away from others.

Visit stores only for critical necessities such as food or medicine.

Are you sure? Going for a walk is okay in Arizona as long as distance from others is kept. Also golfing is okay. People need fresh air and exercise.

Wait a few day for it to go into effect after you announce it. That is one way to force a mass exodus.

Thanks to Trump’s Surgeon General and NBC.

He declared Trump’s guidelines to be NATIONAL stay-at-home Directive and said he would be calling the Florida governor.

Will he also call all the other governors?

The lack of logic is astounding. I went to McD’s drive through. The lady handed me a basket in which to put my debit card. She then picked up my card and ran it through the machine and then back into the basket for me. I’m not sure what the basket accomplished - we both touched the card, the basket was just a middleman.
