House Passes $2 Trillion Emergency Relief Bill by Voice Vote After Hostile Debate

The CARES Act, the $2 trillion coronavirus emergency relief bill that serves as Phase Three of Congress's coronavirus relief efforts, has passed the House of Representatives. It is the largest stimulus package in U.S. history and aims to provide funding for hospitals, and targeted relief for small businesses. The successful vote comes after hours of cantankerous debate, in which one unhinged Democratic representative was ruled " out of order " on the House floor.

Once the measure finally passed, the entire House erupted - in a positive way.

WOW and just like that, the motion is adopted.

Entire House on its feet.

Have not seen unity like this on a major, tough bill in a long long time.

The monumental vote was emphasized by the following photo. It's not often we see scenes like this.

Are you saying PDJT is wrong?

I’m saying I don’t agree w/POTUS in calling out Rep Massie.

I’m saying I sure don’t agree with this pork.

And...I sure support Rep Massie in trying to keep this vote a recorded vote, and not allow Congress to hide behind, yet another, voice vote.

Are YOU saying you’re okay with all of the above?

Thank you for your response and I respect your point of view. As for me, don’t have a strong opinion either way on the matter as what takes place is entirely out of my control. I tend to have strong opinions on matters I can influence

Well, what what your reason for posting POTUS’ tweet to me?

Just curious.

-- Certainly said Business needs to document the expenditures, no? --

Yep. But the revenue to cover them doesn't have to come from sales. The free money gets taxed in the next cycle because it drops to the bottom line.

Just curious as to what you may have thought about PDJT’s tweet about Rep. Massie. Your response satisfied my curiosity.

Everyone is touting this gargantuan spending Bill.

It has a huge down side: INFLATION

NO ONE is talking about the inflationary effect.....everything will go up in price and seniors, and retirees on fixed incomes, such as social security pensioners, will have to watch their dollars buy less and less.

Literally no one is talking about this at all, except for guess who? Mark Levin.

Unfortunately Mark is right about the huge inflationary spiral the country will soon enter.Government fixed retirement payments will now suffer reduction by inflation, and the elderly will likely become impoverished in overwhelming numbers over the next 24 months.

Good post. They’ve got Trump and Xi “getting together” speak today, to rev up the China-US corporation cartel. Still no inspections in China.

Sorry to hear that buddy. We would be better off just working instead of this and the stimulus which is too much money to burden future Americans with. People will demand this crap everytime something happens now

It was a voice vote. Representative Massie of Kentucky tried to get a recorded vote but he was voted down. On a voice vote. He then tried to get a quorum count. He was voted down. On a voice vote. No other Republicans backed him up. Supposedly Pelosi had made sure that there were 216 members ( a quorum) in the chamber but we will never know for certain.

How did he get voted down? I thought any single member could force a quorum count, and I didn't think it took much to force a recorded vote as well?

Inflation is a minor issue. The big one is that this is the first time the Republicans have so explicitly run roughshod with FedGov action over the Constitution. FDor most of this bill, FedGov has zero power or authority to do this, yet supposedly Conservative Republicans voted FOR this by 100% (-1). Massie is the ONLY one I heard going against this, not Cruz, not Paul, not Inhofe, not Barrasso, not Jordan...

Representatives “were brought into the chamber, including in the public galleries above the floor to allow them to distance themselves for safety. By having a quorum of members in the chamber — at least 216 lawmakers, including in the public galleries — they could block Massie’s request for a recorded vote and pass the proposal by voice vote.

At 1 p.m. Pelosi took the floor to essentially stall for time so both parties’ whip teams could corral enough members on the floor. At one point, Pelosi urged her members to move even more quickly: “Come on, my colleagues, to the gallery!”

The plan worked — Massie was quickly overruled and the bill passed without members having to take a recorded vote. But lawmakers in both parties were still irate that they had to be present at all, endangering themselves and the dozens of congressional and Capitol support staff on hand, all because of Massie’s singular objection.”—politico.com

Rep Massie asked for a quorum count and the presiding officer said “a quorum is present.” That was it. Two seconds later the bill was passed and the House adjourned.
Rep. Massie’s motion for a recorded vote needed a second. There was no second.
