This is the inevitable result from a country that chose government to run their society.
In a free, capitalist society with no government enforced “barriers to entry”, individuals would be working feverishly to fill the void in health services to include building companies to build new health equipment and make-shift hospitals.
In Italy, which is a “mostly” socialist country, they let people die.
Kind of a sharp contrast between socialism and capitalism, eh? So, vote Donald J. Trump, folks. Bernie or Joey will kill us all...but slowly.

I am trying to find an article about old medicine found in a shuttered store in a western town - that stock received in the 1950’s -still in their shipping boxes, all expired decades ago. They were tested and almost everyone of them where over 90% still effective!

To be fair, Italy is also desperately trying to fill the gap with borrowed gear, makeshift hospitals, etc., and it’s not enough.
And it’s not just Italy doing this - there are reports that New York and other cities in the US are starting to do similar triage. There just isn’t enough resources to go around in many cities. Even capitalist societies take time to spin up production - and we handed most of ours to China, further handicapping us.
Quite a few here, especially in the Flubros clique, say exactly that, that it is not serious at all, just a worse flu.
Here in the Midwest, nursing homes/assisted living centers were the first to get shut down.
How many people in Italy, right now, are sitting on their butt waiting for the 'government' to do something. Not everyone, of course, but too many. Italy is the bottom picture. Of course, this picture shows only two data points when the slide between capitalism and socialism to communism is a continuum.

Unfortunately, as has recently been demonstrated by the FDA, there are government imposed barriers here in the US too.
Friends in Italy say that their remaining medical device industry is trying to spin up, not waiting for the government, but it’s small and just like here was decimated by regulation and outsourcing to China.
It’s a shame because Italy still actually has a pretty good plastics industry.
On the other hand... I’m not sure a ventilator made with Magnetti Marelli electrics is the greatest idea in the world.
There are only 60,000 ventilators in the US via new reports - NY says it has 5,000 but needs 30,000
Totally agree and I do not believe I ever noted that somehow the US is a capitalist society. It is not. I did note, instead, to vote for Donald J. Trump and not Bernie or Joey.
The US is somewhere closer to the bottom picture that I posted, and the FDA is a perfect example of that, as you noted.
So, now is the time to write that I have a favorite economist in Milton Friendman. He had alot to say about the FDA and said it should be abolished. I agree. See the video below:

The number from last week was 80K, but I bet personnel have been dragging unused ventilators out of storage and finding some of them don’t work.

The Teva drugs are made in Israel.
