When this ends, I will NEVER go on vacation to Italy.

Not even this will convince you?

My great aunt lived to 101. She was very sharp mentally until around 95. Was still driving at 95 and had recently taken a driving test to verify she was still capable. She got a cold or flu at 96, and even though she fought that off, it started the downward spiral.

why are so many of y'all on both sides of this situation using so much of your time to go after one another?

Welcome to Free Republic.

Not sure about that, folks with COPD take an inhaler and go swimming, biking, everything in the tv ads. The family members I have had with COPD could barely get out of bed and never away from oxygen.

Hydroxychloroquine is a standard treatment for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis under the name Plaquenil. It is most certainly available in many pharmacies in the US right now.

Teva in Israel is shipping several million doses to the US, and Mylan is restarting a shuttered pharm plant in West Virginia to make it. They say they have precursors on hand to make 50 million doses.

Chloroquine (distinct from the related hydroxychloroquine), from what I've read, you don't want to take anyway. It has some nasty side effects, including irreversible eye damage in some folks.

It's a choice we shouldn't have to make.

First of all, that young person has a much better chance than you do, due
to age.

Second, why didn't we have test kits by the time this was surging in
the United States?

Early on between 100 and 135 nations around the world were reporting
positive cases. We're talking little Podunk nations, some of them.
Why weren't we able to?

I have a family member who was tested last week. This person is
waiting for the seven days it takes to get back the report.

Helen Keller could have seen this one coming, and we didn't think to
get testing kits ready?

Now they are coming online with testing that reveal the results
in about 45 minutes.

They should have been available a month ago.

I'm not going to sit still while the powers that be simply tell you
to go home and die. They're lopping a potential of 1/3rd of your life
off on a whim.

Glad she had all that time, and was able to use/enjoy it.

Glad she fought the flu off, but sadly it took it’s toll.

I really enjoy older people like that.

Sorry for your loss.

Ironically, the military did a study a couple of decades ago which showed that medications that were kept in reasonably well temperature and humidity controlled conditions were still over 90% effective as much as a decade after their supposed expiration dates. Expiration dates are required by the FDA, and are a source of very profitable business for the drug companies, because no one wants to take something that is expired. All that means is that effectiveness of that medication may drop below 95% of what it was when it was originally manufactured. That is good enough in almost all cases, and especially during an emergency.

or post stats on how many people have died of the flu as though that has any relevance to the reality of hospital systems being overwhelmed by COVID-19 that does not occur with the seasonal flu.

The big problem with Italy, is that if you died after being
confirmed to have COVID-19, you were automatically deemed
to have died of COVID-19.

Many of those who came down with it, were already ill. Some
of those people were deemed not to be likely to make it to the
end of the year, even without COVID-19. None the less, they
were pronounced dead from COVID-19.

I read a very decent article on the problem. It was from a health agency. Can’t put my fingers on it now.

In the article, it stated that each death from Italy would have to have a chart review before they will know how many
actually died from COVID-19.
