Dr Anthony Fauci has rebuked Donald Trump's claim that anti-malaria drug chloroquine could be a game-changer in the fight against COVID-19.
Dr Facui, who is a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, made the claim during an interview with Anderson Cooper on CNN Thursday evening.
'There's no magic drug for coronavirus right now,' the top doctor told Cooper.
Earlier in the day, Trump told media that there had been positive results after doctors trialled chloroquine on COVID-19 patients, and suggested the drug could be a game-changer.
'It's shown very, very encouraging early results. We're going to be able to make that drug available almost immediately. It's been approved,' he said.
However, Dr Fauci said on CNN just a few hours later: 'Let me put it into perspective for the viewers .. there has been anecdotal non-proven data that it [chloroquine] works... but when you have an uncontrolled trial you can never definitely say that it works'.
He repeated his caution on Friday in an interview with Today, saying: 'Even though the information is anecdotal that they may work, we need to prove it so people would get the right drug that's safe and effective.
'What we're saying is these are drugs that have some suggestion that they may work,' he went on, but that controlled trials needed to be done to prove that they are effective.
The University of Minnesota is looking for people who have been in contact with a known positive case of COVID-19 to volunteer for a trial to test Hydroxychloroquine and see if it is effective in preventing people from catching the virus.
They need 1,500 people to take part in the trial and so far have 150.

True, but as a doctor Dr. Fauci needs to keep up on his reading. Like this clinical trial with excellent results from a team of top virologists in France.
He told me my black oxfords will be ready next Tuesday.
Oh. Now I understand where you’re coming from. You want to be a guinea pig for a clinical trial. I think there are many who’d do that, but can’t find enough people. They should be able to find more than 150 people in this PANDEMIC!! It’s worst pandemic ever if they can’t rustle up more than 150 sick people.
I’ve always been a risk taker.
for enough money they can inject me with deadliest strain and leave me in a freezing room for a week.
i’ll either die or have 5k in my pocket :)
they were paying 4k in CA last week i think
“Why does this Fauci strike me as the Schumer of Medicine?”
You mean don’t get between either one of them and a camera? If so, you are correct. He’s practically orgasmic when he’s at the podium flailing his arms and being the center of attention. Really ... he’s giddy.
BS...
There is no need for a right to try exemption. Both hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin are FDA approved prescription drugs so any MD or DO can prescribe them based on their own clinical decisions. The combination of drugs has been shown to be effective by multiple small clinical trials against COVID-19 infections so there is a solid basis for a physician to use them in treatment absent any patient specific contraindication like a known drug allergy.
this just crossed my desk from Medscape.
Medscape is a respectable medical site for physicians.
Medscape it saying yes, why not? the reseach looks good
“Sadly, there are many physicians and hospitals who are fearful of doing anything new until the FDA has officially completed a large study proving efficacy. Many people will die before these overly cautious doctors & hospitals stop restricting themselves to routine.”
there may some truth to that, but are there any cases right now that you are aware of where patients in the hospital with COVID-19 are being denied hydroxychloroquine? ...
as best as i can tell, no one is waiting for anything regarding hydroxychloroquine for hospitalized with COVID-19 ... TEVA and Mylan are gearing up right now to produce and DONATE millions of doses of hydroxychloroquine to U.S. hospitals ... Fauci just said the drug is going out RIGHT NOW for use and the FDA’s only interest is in collecting data AFTER THE FACT ...
doctor’s prescribe off-label use of drugs all the time as it’s totally legal and ethical to do so without prior approval by the FDA or anyone else ... there are thousands of medical papers by individual doctors and groups of doctors reporting on off-label use of various drugs and treatments for various conditions to help other doctors be more effective ... right now, i’m personally taking a drug that’s been prescribed off-label for me for over 20 years, and it’s been nearly a miracle drug for me ...
“What we’re saying is these are drugs that have some suggestion that they may work,’ he went on, but that controlled trials needed to be done to prove that they are effective.”
Treatment with it now provides opportunity for such trials.
Now is the time.
Can’t do a trial on it when the disease isn’t occurring.
The hysteria is out of control and the Dem Governor’s are fueling it
I’m not going to argue with that. I want the drug to work. I want to have some hope if I get sick, and I want the same for others.
This is the difference in attitudes between can-do and can’t-do people.
Dr. Fauci gave the response you would expect a scientist or clinician to give. I want stats and facts from a controlled trial before giving my opinion.
Will all due respect to Dr. Fauci, this thing is not occurring in a controlled test environment. The clock is ticking. Either it will become an epidemic that crashes the hospitals, or destroys the economy, or people will just run out of patience with Slow the Spread and engage in mass civil disobedience.
His devotion to scientific method is getting in the way here.
Fauci is a public employee, Trump is a world class leader, big difference.
We are at the infection inflection point, 4 days behind Italy. The over crowded ICUs and mass graves are coming1. Didn't you see the YouTube video?! 2 million dead just in the US alone. Total societal collapse, life in 1000 years will remember this FLU. You DENIER! The reason is they are too sick to even pickup the phone or respond to an email about the study. A phone call with Mary Jane Muckenfutch in Springfield, Mass taped today and I quote... "I have stage 6 ass cancer and it's nothing compared to this FLU. No joke Don!"
I remember reading an early report of one of these studies and I distinctly remember it stating that 75% of patients were virus free after six days. Am I mistaken about that?
Trump is unfortunately stuck with this attention whore.
Good grief, some of you people on here. Fauci did not rebuke Trump, he's covering the administration's ass. It's the left-wing media stirring the pot as usual. There do need to be some measures and testing, but the treatment is very promising. I bet they are using it all over the place already, and that's why China pulled their White Knight stunt in Europe, to save what they can before the West and America save the world again.
We are WINNING. Not tired of it, yet, are you?
I saw President Trumps statement and Faucis semi-rebuttal statement this morning. It is not as the article above presents it. Both the President and Fauci are correct, just saying the same thing from a different perspective.
The President said, Lets try it, we have some good preliminary results, see what happens. What have we got to lose? Fauci said Lets try it. But just because we have only anecdotal reports which are not true evidence, when we try it, lets make sure we do it so we can get some accurate data to know if is effective or not. What the hell is the difference? One is a layman making the statement the other is a scientist making the statement. SHEESH!
