President Trump said in an interview broadcast Sunday that he thinks Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is a communist.
Fox News host Sean Hannity asked Trump in an interview that aired prior to Super Bowl LIV for quick reactions to a number of Democratic presidential candidates, including Sanders.
"I think he’s a communist. I mean, you know, look, I think of communism when I think of Bernie," Trump told Fox News host Sean Hannity.
"Now, you could say socialist, but didn’t he get married in Moscow?" Trump added, with Hannity interjecting to note Sanders went to the former Soviet Union on his honeymoon.
"I think of Bernie sort of as a socialist but far beyond a socialist," Trump continued. "At least he’s true to what he believes."
Trump's comments were broadcast a day before the Iowa caucuses. Sanders, who identifies as a democratic socialist, has been leading in the most recent polls in the state.
The president and his campaign last month started focusing additional attention on Sanders, who has consistently been among the best-performing candidates in polls alongside former Vice President Joe Biden.

When something is “needless to say”, there is no need to say it.
Well let’s see - honeymooned in the communist Soviet Union, he and his wife went back again for a fact finding mission to the communist Soviet Union and came back praising their policies and “palaces of culture”, praise of the communist Castro regime and its policies, praise of the Sandinistas, praise of communist China’s policies, top advisers support Chavez / Maduro’s communist regime, the project veritas videos of his campaign staff, etc. Gee, I wonder what would make the President think such a thing about Sanders?

Of course he knows Bernie is a commie. Of course he didn’t just discover it.
This is his way of getting it into the discourse without sounding like a personal attack
Sanders thinks Sanders is a communist.
Everyone knows that Sanders is actually a socialist. But socialism and communism have totalitarian governments run by tyrants and dictators who have no qualms about murdering millions of their own people.
Remember boys and girls, you can vote your way into socialism, but you’ll have to shoot your way out.
I always suspected Trump had a grasp for the obvious. Sanders is on record for sympathizing with the Soviet Union. The Evil Empire that murdered tens of millions of people. More than the Nazis.
Trump came right out and said it. Maybe Reagan would have done the same. But can you imagine any such boldness out of either President Bush? Out of Ford? Nixon? Ike?
Exactly. This was the president trolling the likely Democrat nominee. The media will defend Comrade Sanders, but Bernie will be forced to publicly defend himself against the charge, and the president’s campaign team no doubt has a bunch of video of Bernie in the past vocally supporting socialism. This is how you defeat the left!
For accuracy, he didn’t really honeymoon in the Soviet Union. He said it was “like a honeymoon”. Bad enough.
He also said he thought the sun may come up in the East in the morning.
