Veteran investigative journalist Carl Bernstein blasted Senate Republicans on the eve of their vote to determine whether or not witnesses will be allowed in President Trump's Senate impeachment trial.
"The Senate of the United States, through the Republican leadership and membership, has now joined hands with a tyrant," said Bernstein. "We now have a precedent that's been set, especially if we're going to follow this new catechism, this cult of Trump that professor Dershowitz has advanced, this catechism that he cannot abuse his power. So, totally different situation than what happened in Watergate, because in Watergate the real heroes were Republicans who stopped tyranny."
Republicans and Democrats fiercely clashed over the prospect of new witnesses in the Senate trial. Sens. Susan Collins and Mitt Romney announced they will vote in favor of witnesses while Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander said he would vote against allowing new witnesses to address the body.
That leaves Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski as the key remaining Republican left to decide a crucial step for Democrats in the trial. If Murkowski sides with Democrats to allow witnesses, her vote would likely push the final count to an even 50-50 tie. Analysts suggest this hypothetical situation would allow Republicans to claim victory and block witnesses from appearing.
Bernstein, who helped uncover the Watergate scandal that ended President Richard Nixon's term in the Oval Office, has called Trump's impeachment trial a "cover-up" and said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has "impeded facts from the beginning."
Heck, I would have thrown in Ned Beatty for the “You have meddled with the primal forces of nature” rant, alone.
Ned Beatty should’ve gotten Best Supporting Actor over Jason Robards, Jr. in that hysterically overrated “All The President’s Men” anti-Nixon propaganda (which, of course, ties back into the subject of this thread).
No acts of tyranny by Trump come to mind.
I'm sure Carl was one of those applauding Soetoro's promise to enact legislation on his own and stood idly by while Soetoro's IRS targetted Tea Party groups and his Attorney General transferred arms to Mexican drug cartels.
Can you imagine the conniption that would cause if President Trump and his Attorney General hemmed and hawed around that question?
That would be awesome to witness.
He’s a bloviating little pus bag.
“Dear Officer Krupki we’re down on our knees/’cuz no one wants a fella wit a social disease!’’
You bet, DoughtyOne...:)
I could have done better on that response.
I agree with regard to Nixon and the last few democRats presidents.
Obama
Clinton
Carter
These three had their own ways of showing contempt for our nation.
Broken down old drunk Bernstein is quite the drama queen. Holding hands with a tyrant LMAO! He should be writing boring scripts with Schittforbrains.
Every hour of every day the corrupt Rats and Fake News prove that at the core of everything, theyre just petty bitter sore losers.
As another FReeper posted:
Carl Bernstein is the Garfunkel of journalism...............
The rats complain that if only they still had a monopoly on the media, they could have sunk Trump like they did Nixon.
I think if we had Fox News/Talk Radio/Twitter/Facebook we could have saved him from that BS.
Carl, you 15 minutes of fame came and went decades ago, accept it and move on, man.
