I circle around UCLAs Moore Hall for the third time. Security officers block each entrance. Police in riot gear patrol the streets. Metal fences wall off the building from protesters, and barricades separate protesters on the left from those on the right. Everyone prepares for Donald Trump Jr.s arrival to promote his new book, Triggered: How the Left Thrives on Hate and Wants to Silence Us.
As a trauma therapist who works with women and refugees and who practices on Canadas west coast I admit that I live in a progressive bubble. Ive never met a Trump supporter in the flesh and the psychiatrist in me is curious: What puzzle pieces of life experience could come together to produce a world-view so opposite to mine? I hope to chat with a Trump voter to try to understand.
But then I see my first MAGA hat.
My mind floods with images of climate activist Greta Thunberg crying How dare you? and white men marching in straight-pride parades, wielding swastikas, guns and Confederate flags. I envision immigrant children warehoused in cages and online comments that scream, Go back to where you came from.
I tense up and glare at the man in MAGA. I want him to feel unwelcome, unsafe and, mostly, to feel shame.
Im at UCLA to attend a psychotherapy course to learn about these kind of moments when big emotions short circuit our minds higher functions so we cant think or behave skillfully. The professor playfully called it boom time. In other words, were triggered.

Note to self. Wear MAGA hat everywhere everyday.

Her brain has short circuits.
Guy sounds like a real p*ssy. Hope he doesn’t try to reproduce.
Triggered by a hat?
Gee.. wonder what he’d do if I gave him the middle finger while wearing a MAGA hat?
Then she speaks of higher functions.
Grow up you overeducated idjit.

I was almost tempted to click on the link and read the whole article but then I remembered by New Year's Resolution.
Does it get any better? And by that I mean, did she recognize that she needs to seek professional help?
She wants me to feel shame? I certainly can’t claim to be proud of everything I’ve ever done but one thing I’ll be forever proud of is my admiration of,and respect for,President Trump.
“Ive never met a Trump supporter in the flesh...”
Talk about a person living in an insulated, self imposed impenetrable echo chamber.
That entire scenario is just plain creepy.......and scary!
To what? Perpetuate the trauma?
Oops.
It’s a “her” not a him.
Comment still stands otherwise. Especially the part about not breeding. We have enough snowflakes to be dealt with right now.
She is the “professional” she has been waiting for.
I’m impressed—an actual resolution to follow the unofficial FR protocols on commenting.
Yikes.
Triple bagger. Not even with Beer Goggles....
I wouldn’t even put a flag over her head and “do it for my Country”.
Some sacrifices are too much to make.
” I want him to feel unwelcome, unsafe and, mostly, to feel shame.”
Maybe it’s just me, but I get triggered by people that react like that to hats or to people with different opinions.
But we don’t have to concern ourselves with offending the likes of me, do we? Only the feelings of approved persons matter. Kind of like royalty, they are.
Yeah, low hanging fruit. It’s the only resolution I’ve been able to keep since 1996.
She has the confused type of demons.

Sounds like she really needs it.
