Nickolas B. Monroe, a 26-year-old resident of Walnut Avenue in Bunnells Mondex neighborhood, shot and killed a dog Thursday (Dec. 5), firing at the animal in front of its owners, a 15-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. The teens had just asked permission from Monroe to look for their dog, a Great Pyrenees, whod strayed onto Monroes property.
The dog, according to Monroe, had previously gone onto his property many times and killed more than a dozen of his chickens, and his owners had been warned.
The incident took place Thursday evening. James Smith, 59, a resident of Walnut Avenue and a neighbor of Monroes, had reported to 911 that a neighbor shot their dog in front of the children, according to a sheriffs incident report.
He told deputies that his daughterthe 15-year-old girlhad lost control of their dog, which had then gone into Monroes nearby yard. Smiths daughter and son went looking for the dog. Monroe gave them permission to look on his property. Smith helped as well, as did Monroe, who brought a flashlight.
But Monroe told Smith that if the dog had one of his cats he would kill it, according to a sheriffs incident report.
They then discovered the dog just inside the wood line in the back of Monroes residence. According to Smith, Monroe then pulled a gun from his waistline and shot the dog. Smith reported about six shots, though only one bullet wound was found on the dog. The dog had apparently killed one of Monroes cats.

When I had a dog, it was either inside the house, or in a fenced yard from which it never escaped. When I took it for a walk, it was always on a leash.
People who “lose control of their dog” should be prepared to lose the dog.
Spare the rod, spoil the dog. Dog gets shot.
That is one of many things that can happen when a dog is not properly controlled.
Do not put kids in charge of the dog.
A dog owner, especially of a large dog, must protect everyone from their dog, and they must also protect their dog from everyone, including themselves, because dogs do what dogs do.
Many years ago, my mom’s cat killed a 3 year old doberman pinscher. The dog owner sued. The judge threw out the case, because there was a leash law for dogs and none for cats.
That must have been one bad-A cat to kill a 3 year-0ld Dobie.
Teens and dad can’t control their huge dog - kills livestock. -
owner warned.
dog lose again. Kills again.
Dog now “controlled” -
Owners of dog contributed to it’s death.
Game over.
When I last had a dog, I spent quite a lot of time working with him to ensure he was reliable off-leash.
It’s not something that happens by accident.
During a 2 month period our dogs kill 3 cats and numerous chickens.
It was the last time those cats and chickens would come in our walled property.
Seems as though he gave them fair warning after the dog had done great damage. Good that he hasn’t been charged, but I sense a lawsuit coming from the parents due to emotional damage to their kids.
Dog was on his property. A clean shoot.
Sorry to hear this Great Pyrenees was left to run on his own. When untrained they are roamers.
People who lose control of their dog should be prepared to lose the dog.
Problem these days, if you shoot a dog in defense of yourself or others, there are way too many people of the mindset that 'You shoot my dog, I shoot you!'
No matter what the dog did. So now you might have to shoot a person as well.
A friend has one for the same reason. Tends live stock and keeps varmits away from his garden and orchard. Very tough dogs.
My uncle owned a chicken ranch near Merced and had to shoot his dog cause it was killing chickens. My older brother never forgave him but I knew then that once a dog starts killing it’s time to put them down easy. Hey,it’s a business.
Had a dog that chased the nearby farmers cattle. The farmer told us he could either shoot the dog or we could pay for the injured cattle. Dad told him to be sure to shoot the dog.
OTH. I hit and killed a dog with my car while it was running loose on the street. The owner thought to make me pay and was shocked to learn not only would he not be paid for the loss of his dog but he would have to pay for the damages to my car.
I hate it when I cannot tell what state this is, or even if it’s America, England, Australia... where is this??
An expensive lesson in responsibility for the deceased dog’s owner, if indeed the lesson has been learned. Having read the comments by said owner, it seems unlikely.
Opinion: Once the dog acquired a taste for killing livestock, this was inevitable.
Disclosure: Admirer of Great Pyrenees dogs.
The dog owners should be going to jail for the dog’s destructive behavior.
