When I had a dog, it was either inside the house, or in a fenced yard from which it never escaped. When I took it for a walk, it was always on a leash.
People who “lose control of their dog” should be prepared to lose the dog.
Spare the rod, spoil the dog. Dog gets shot.
That is one of many things that can happen when a dog is not properly controlled.
Do not put kids in charge of the dog.
A dog owner, especially of a large dog, must protect everyone from their dog, and they must also protect their dog from everyone, including themselves, because dogs do what dogs do.
Many years ago, my mom’s cat killed a 3 year old doberman pinscher. The dog owner sued. The judge threw out the case, because there was a leash law for dogs and none for cats.
Teens and dad can’t control their huge dog - kills livestock. -
owner warned.
dog lose again. Kills again.
Dog now “controlled” -
Owners of dog contributed to it’s death.
Game over.
During a 2 month period our dogs kill 3 cats and numerous chickens.
It was the last time those cats and chickens would come in our walled property.
Seems as though he gave them fair warning after the dog had done great damage. Good that he hasn’t been charged, but I sense a lawsuit coming from the parents due to emotional damage to their kids.
Dog was on his property. A clean shoot.
Problem these days, if you shoot a dog in defense of yourself or others, there are way too many people of the mindset that 'You shoot my dog, I shoot you!'
No matter what the dog did. So now you might have to shoot a person as well.
My uncle owned a chicken ranch near Merced and had to shoot his dog cause it was killing chickens. My older brother never forgave him but I knew then that once a dog starts killing it’s time to put them down easy. Hey,it’s a business.
Had a dog that chased the nearby farmers cattle. The farmer told us he could either shoot the dog or we could pay for the injured cattle. Dad told him to be sure to shoot the dog.
OTH. I hit and killed a dog with my car while it was running loose on the street. The owner thought to make me pay and was shocked to learn not only would he not be paid for the loss of his dog but he would have to pay for the damages to my car.
I hate it when I cannot tell what state this is, or even if it’s America, England, Australia... where is this??
An expensive lesson in responsibility for the deceased dog’s owner, if indeed the lesson has been learned. Having read the comments by said owner, it seems unlikely.
Opinion: Once the dog acquired a taste for killing livestock, this was inevitable.
Disclosure: Admirer of Great Pyrenees dogs.
The dog owners should be going to jail for the dog’s destructive behavior.
Stray dog that harms others animals can be shot
The same is true for stray cats. After being shot with an air rifle two or three times, even stray cats learn to stay away
once a dog gets a taste for fresh chicken...that’s it
Killing dogs that kill livestock is legal in most states.
L
Neighbors dog kept coming in my brother’s yard and chasing the wild turkeys.
He told the owner that if the dog did it again he would shoot the dog. The neighbor flipped out and told him that he would have him arrested.
So I did a little legal research for Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Game Laws state that it is ok to shoot a dog chasing big game animals. It further states that a turkey is a big game animal.
It goes on to say that the animal cruelty laws do not apply in this situation.
And finally the law requires the shooter to keep the dog and turn it over to law enforcement so they can arrest its owner for failure to keep their dog under control.
I am not an attorney and this is not legal advice. Each state and situation is unique.
I have dogs and Love dogs. However, as a farmer I lost many animals to dogs.
I had to do that to two dogs years ago. They escaped a farm half a mile from me, came up into my doorway and trapped the kid’s pet kitten against the screen door and ripped it apart.
The owner of the dogs was not happy his dogs were dead. The wife of the owner of the now dead dogs complained to a woman she worked with, and come to find out that woman was my next door neighbor. She said she was glad the dogs were shot as her little daughter loved to play with that kitten. What would have happened if she had been playing with it when the dogs attacked.
Even the city cop supported my decision.
Unfortunately they attacked and killed a neighbor's cow. Of course he had to reimburse the neighbor for the cow but also had to euthanize the dogs......
