Addressing reporters at a press conference Monday, Pompeo said: "The Trump Administration is reversing the Obama Administration's towards Israeli settlements. US public statements on settlement activities in the West Bank have been inconsistent over decades."
"In 1978, the Carter Administration categorically concluded that Israel's establishment of civilian settlements was inconsistent with international law. However, in 1981, President Reagan disagreed with that conclusion and stated that he didn't believe that the settlements were inherently illegal. Subsequent administrations recognized that unrestrained settlement activity could be an obstacle to peace, but they wisely and prudently recognized that dwelling on ;legal positions didn't advance peace," Pompeo explained.
He accused former US Secretary of State John Kerry of changing "decades of this careful, bipartisan approach by publicly reaffirming the supposed illegality of settlements" in December 2016, at the end of the Obama Administration.
"After carefully studying all sides of the legal debate, this administration agrees with President Reagan," Pompeo declared. "The establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per say, inconsistent with international law."
He further stated that the Trump Administration recognized the authority of Israeli courts on the legality of specific Israeli communities in Judea and Samaria.
"The Israeli legal system affords an opportunity to challenge settlement activity and assess humanitarian considerations connected to it. Israeli courts have confirmed the legality of certain settlement activities, and has concluded that others cannot be legally sustained.
He added: "We are not addressing or prejudging the ultimate status of the West Bank. This is for the Israelis and the Palestinians to negotiate. International law does not compel a particular outcome nor create any legal obstacle to a negotiated resolution."
Ping.
“per say”
The Israeli high court is so far left, it thinks it’s centrist. They might be more brutal than international courts with the outposts.
Sorry but Pompeo and the Israeli courts are playing to their respective domestic political realities. These settlements will not contribute to a peaceful solution. But that very well may be the point. There can never be a true peace between Palestine and Israel. Each side emotionally covets the same land and will not accept political rule from the other. Peace will only come when either Palestine or Israel ceases to be a definable political entity. Just very sad and tragic that America has been entangled in this insolvable dispute and has made and will continue to make enormous sacrifices of blood and treasure.
The US military does not protect Israel. We fight our own battles. As for the 3.8 Billion that we get and have to spend on US-made weapons, that’s chump change in foreign aid terms. Look at what the US gives to Egypt and Iraq. It’s nice to have, but we can live without it, and personally, I wish we did.
The “settlements” are actually the best hope for peace. Evacuate Ghaza, you got missiles. Judah and Samaria remains a mix of Israeli and Arab settlements, and we use the same highways, meet for commerce and employment, and know each other albeit with limitations. Some Arabs, with faultless records, live in Efrat, which is right across Highway 60 from my home. Remaining neighbors humanizes both Jews and Arabs in one another’s eyes. It’s called integration, and it’s not that different from what went on in the United States not too long ago.
However, since there will be peaceful solution, it doesn’t matter in any way.
On it!
The only thing that makes Israel any different from the others is that the Muslims fuss a lot about Israel getting the same deal other nations did.
No, the Pali’s hate Jews and want to destroy Israel. Makes no difference what Israel does. Before Israel closed the border, there were constant bombings, especially buses. Israel provided employment for thousands of Pali’s and that’s how they repaid them. The Pali’s should be pushed into the sea. Can’t play nice with people whose whole purpose is to destroy you.
good. now we pray that Jerusalem can clear the commies out of its courts!
I was just watching Johnathan Cahn last night, talking about the Abrahamic covenant and that God will bless those that bless Israel and curse those that curse Israel.
He went through 4000 years of history talking about the major empires and how they treated Israel and what happened to them as a result.
He specifically mentioned Obama and the way Obama attempted to interfere in the Israeli election specifically against Nentanyu. He said Obama was trying to wipe out Nentanyu’s legacy. So Obama’s legacy is being wiped out.
Hence the problem. Despite the progress, enlightenment, material well being, improvements in infrastructure, education, health care, agriculture, water supplies, nutrition etc . etc that the Jews brought and developed in the region for everyone, the Arabs will never give the Jews peace.
An ironic aside from this American’s experiences. Whenever a “Palestinian” born in Israel is met here in America, it is very obvious how avidly they adapt to American institutions, opportunities and customs. Compared to many other immigrant groups they quickly prosper. It would seem that before they migrated they learned and incorporated quite a bit from their Jewish neighbors. The tragedy is that somehow the true benefits of peace and interaction cannot be achieved in the Holy Land due to the implacable hatred. Yet as mentioned before, it is not the job or duty of Americans to sacrifice blood or treasure getting entangled in this hopeless dispute. American involvement has created implacable enemies for America and has not mitigated the dispute or helped them achieve some sort of consensus.
****ed right.
“... it is not the job or duty of Americans to sacrifice blood or treasure getting entangled in this hopeless dispute.”
Nobody has asked Americans to sacrifice blood. No such blood was sacrificed for Israel. The Marines in Beirut died keeping the PLO safe from Israelis, under stupid ROE that made it impossible for them to even keep peace. For all of me, we should not have been stopped. As for the treasure, I’d as soon you kept that, too, but it doesn’t amount to all that much compared to other American financial involvements.
As for getting entangled in this dispute, you’re not a party to it. Previous POTUSes got involved in making peace between Jooos! and Palis for the benefit of Saudi Arabia, who must pay constant extortion to Pali hustlers like Arafat and Abu Mazen. In lieu of the money, they want a fiefdom here. What benefit that is to Palis or Jooos!...? Who cares. We’ll say that it’s about piece in the Middle East. Welcome to Area A.
Admire Israel and all that has been accomplished. Took a lot of chutzpah. Just like your rant.
In the alternative, this is still for the benefit of Saudi Arabia, because the oil sheikh’s live a decadent lifestyle. Quite aside from the drunkenness, homosexuality and whoring, they do something much worse. They daily do business with infidels, and they don’t even bitch slap them. So to give them cred among Wahhabist nutbags, they prevail on the US to lean on Israelis in order to “help” the pore oppressed Palis. Being under the thumb of the PA does not do Palis one bit of earthly good, but the Israelis suffer, too, and what’s most important, benefits the oil sheikhs.
Observant intelligent people are well aware of the Saudi government intelligence services being well aware of the 9/11 plot and did nothing to stop it or warn the Americans. They are also well aware of the fact that the Bush family became incredibly wealthy in the oil business with a few quid pro quos with the decadent Saudis. After the Saudi sanctioned 9/11 attack GW Bush knew of the Saudi complicity but somehow chose to attack and destroy Saudi Arabia’s existential enemy Iraq. Over three thousand young brave American were killed, tens of thousands more physically and psychologically maimed and of course over three trillion dollars squandered. On top of it the debacle made the Obama Presidency possible. America suffers in many ways from these needless entanglements.
Actually its probably in the best interest of Israel to disengage from America. IMHO the Russians since the fall of communism have had a much more realistic approach to the area and its realities. Israel has many historic and cultural ties with Russia and they seem to understand each other well.
Love the story about the Saudis and the 2014 winter Olympics. The Saudis were very upset that Putin was supporting Assad and were disrupting their ISIS dreams. They advised Putin that if his support for Assad continued then they could not guarantee that the winter Olympics being held in Russia would not suffer terrorist attacks. Putin was grateful of the Saudi guarantee. He then stationed three Russian nuclear submarines off the coasts of Saudi Arabia and told the Saudis that if the Olympics were attacked, he would not be attacking Iraq. There were no attacks on the Russian Olympics.
Yet you, as a patriotic Israeli ( who I suspect was born in the US) should understand that as much as decent Americans admire what Israel has accomplished and built after the Holocaust and why it could not be done any other way, American support has had its consequences for the American people. It would be beyond naiveite not to understand the motivation of those vile, hateful privileged Saudis that resulted in the 9/11 carnage and all that followed. Neither you or I will be around long enough to read the dispassionate history of these times that will be written say two hundred years from now.
Actually its probably in the best interest of Israel to disengage from America.
America has its history of double-dealings as much as any superpower. It also has a moral compass. Russia has as much of a moral compass as any large, ferocious bear.
“IMHO the Russians since the fall of communism have had a much more realistic approach to the area and its realities. Israel has many historic and cultural ties with Russia and they seem to understand each other well.”
See final sentence of last paragraph. We understand them all right. America and Israel don’t always understand each other, because America does not at all understand the Middle East and Israel does. But that’s naivety, not malevolence. They just can’t think like byzantine and assume everyone is as straightforward as they aspire to be, but are not, and have qualms about anything underhanded.
Israelis aren’t naturally byzentine, but they understand it and have to deal with it daily. So we can out-Lavan Lavan, if we keep our eyes open.
For that, America is our bestest friend. It’s like walking through a bad neighborhood with Herman Munster. He’s big and scary looking, and means only good. But he’s also a great deterrent against muggers, even if when somebody comes up to him and asks if he has a nickel, he looks through his pockets to see. The mugger pulls out a knife, but Herman accidentally swats it away and dislocates the mugger’s shoulder while politely explaining that he only has a quarter.
Native of Buffalo, NY, btw.
Bottom line is, the Palestinians are really the least of our worries. They became dangerous because they have been mis-used repeatedly by unscrupulous people, and pointed towards us as the cause of their suffering, and offered incentives for attacking us. In 1968, the PLO attempted set up an office in the “west bank,” but the Arabs living there refused to allow it. They found their “occupation” to be entirely tolerable at the time. Things changed, but that was not inevitable. The rest of the Arab world excepting Jordan didn’t have to keep them in refugee camps and exploit them for crap wages, just for starters.
