Why holding the G-7 at Trump’s Doral property is good for the United States

Even people and publications favorable to President Trump are urging him to cancel plans to host the June 2020 G-7 Summit at the Trump National Golf Course resort near Miami. For example, the New York Post writes:

When you become leader of the Free World, there are some things you have to give up, including any hint of promoting your own properties.

It’s not the obscure issue of “emoluments,” nor the folks who (as Mulvaney put it) “will never get over the fact that it’s a Trump property” that you have to think about, sir.

It’s that voters expect and deserve clear signs that their president is working for them — not promoting himself.

But it’s not just Trump who would be “giving up” something, it is the people of the United States. You see, hosting the leaders of the other 6 largest advanced economies of the world at a property personally owned by Trump inevitably impresses them with his personal capabilities, guts, and strength. They know perfectly well that he didn’t acquire this site by political power, the way, for instance President Putin acquired his wealth. They know that his is a man who acquired huge impressive wealth the old-fashioned way: he earned it. And he earned it in a field that is highly competitive and risky, real estate development.

The rulers of the great powers of the world have always understood that constructing awe-inspiring facilities… inspires awe(and compliance) in their visitors, softening them up to concede to the wishes of their host. That is why Beijing’s Forbidden City, the inner quarters of the emperors and their mandarin administrators, was built .

If we’ve got to host the G-8 then hold it wherever. But anyone who thinks that holding it at the Doral will suddenly make the other seven leaders like and respect Trump or be impressed with him is just kidding themselves. Trump isn’t one of the club and never will be. And I don’t think that bothers him one bit.

I also see it as a favor to anyone who lives near another potential venue for the meeting. A G-7 summit is a disruptive pain in the ass, and I can pretty much guarantee that there would be a lot of whining and complaining from the locals if it was held anywhere else.

My understanding is that Trump was doing this AT COST/NO PROFIT.

Is that true? If so, he’s saving the taxpayers a chunk of change so what’s the freakin problem?

He’s not giving them ammunition so much as inviting them to rage about something stupid.

Before this is over, the event will be free, not just at cost. That will give Trump the high ground.

It’s also an unequivocal opportunity to project personal power. The more they rage, the more powerful Trump appears.

You gotta understand that beneath this is TRUMP TROLLING THE DEMOCRATS.

Trump has made it clear that he doesn’t profit from being here. The resort is doing it at cost…it’s much cheaper to do it at Doral than at other sites [that were being considered.]. This statement was made by OMB Director Mick Mulvaney.

Now, there are two reactions to this -— NO I DON’T BELIEVE THIS or YES, I TAKE HIM AT HIS WORD.

Trump, by doing this, is TROLLING those who think the former ( THOSE WHO HATE HIM ).You can imagine a gleeful Trump tickled pink as his Democratic opponents rage about his choice. Once again, he’s playing them like a fiddle.

It would That would definitely be corrupt — if Trump or his family were actually making any money off the summit.

Congress could easily check on this. The White House says that the resort will host the event “at cost” which, considering the enormous amount of planning and resources that will be devoted to not just rooms for all the leaders, their aides, and their security detachments, but site security, food, press accommodations, and all the rigmarole that goes into these made-for-TV events, means that the emoluments clause doesn’t apply.

In other words, Trump is going to take a financial bath by hosting the summit there.

What won’t be on the bill will be the millions of dollars in free publicity Trump’s property will receive all over the world. So yes, in the end, our president will profit handsomely from holding the summit there.

But he wants the Democrats to waste more of their time investigating this.

If you watched the video you’ll know the last G7 was in 2004 at Camp David. There was a lot of complaints as accommodations were small. Press had to drive an hour just to get there from town and back. Doral is close to the city, restaurants etc for the press. The site itself has nine buildings and large acreage-easy to secure. The team went through a process visited hotels and found that Doral was the best choice. Plus they get it for cost. No profit will be made. As for Trump’s brand, it is already well known. They also are willing to face the press & people freaking out. (Which I thought was funny).
