GOP donors are reportedly encouraging Mitt Romney to primary Trump
The Week ^ | October 7, 2019 | Staff

In recent days, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) has been fielding calls from GOP donors itching for him to primary President Trump in 2020, a person close to Romney told Vanity Fair.

"There is a half-billion dollars on the sidelines from guys who are fed up with Trump," one donor told Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman. Romney has been one of the few Republican voices to speak out against Trump's attempts to get foreign leaders to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, tweeting on Friday that his "brazen and unprecedented appeal to China and to Ukraine ... is wrong and appalling." This earned Romney a rebuke from Trump, who tweeted the next day that he is "a pompous 'ass'" who "never knew how to win."

Both major parties are facing the same dilemma, to different degrees: their major donors have an agenda that has no popular support among most of their voters.

Donald Trump was elected in 2016 because the grassroots GOP voters decided to do something about it.

The donors and the people who run the GOP are now nothing but blatant corporatists. I think the rest of us will just have to demand that they pay more taxes. Since that seems to be the only conservative thing they stand for. As long as GOP supreme court justices refuse to roll back liberal judges and as long as the congress that they control with their wealthy lib counter parts continue to spend money than they need to pay more not less. As long as I read the corporate media and come away with Democratic party slime liar filth than that is another reason why they are not paying enough taxes. Bleed them bleed them dry as far as I am concerned. I am tired of being stabbed in the back by these rino quisling traitors.

It’s all beltway theater. The GOP isn’t going to desert POTUS en masse with McConnell and Graham on the ballot in 2020. If Trump goes down prematurely so do they.

“Let the RINOs resurrect the Whig Party and have at it.”

The Republican Party split once before in 1912.

Teddy Roosevelt and the GOP Left split off and formed the Progressive Party, the real name of the Bullmoose Party.

The Republicans and ex-GOP Progressives combined to win 50% of the popular vote vs Woodrow Wilson’s 42%, with Socialist Eugene Debs getting the rest.

The split gave Wilson the Presidency. The Roosevelt-Hiram Johnson Bullmoose platform was actually to the left of Wilson, despite the nonsense we constantly hear about the GOP having always been a bastion of conservative policy. A large number of those ex-GOP Progressives would go on to join the Democratic Party when Teddy’s cousin FDR won the Presidency 20 years later.

In other words, there’s a half-billion dollars from guys that can’t manipulate the system anymore and take advantage of the American taxpayer with their crony capitalism and being able to buy Congress.

Don't get carried away. They'll always be able to buy congress.

But now the Republican base hates Romney too. Just look at the comments anytime Romney makes a twitter or Facebook post. It makes for fun reading. BTW, I gave a donation to the Donald Trump campaign last week. It was my first time giving to a political campaign of a national candidate. It felt so good. I told family members who told me that they had also given donations to Trump’s campaign last week. We might be small donors, but if my family is any indication, the silent people will not be silent anymore.

Why should he try?

Because it would be fun to see him up on the debate stage with Beto, and Liz and Joe and Bernie

The way Mitt elected not to destroy Obama in the last debate, tells us almost all we need to know about his willingness to defend the American values that emerged from the Revolution. His absurd need to find fault with Donald Trump's willingness to defend that tradition, tells us the rest.

America--in any recognizable form--is the real issue!!

What Drives The Trump Haters

Lol-schism? Surely you aren’t serious. Mittens would be done by Super Tuesday. Trump would destroy him-humiliate him-obliterate him. Everyone knows it and that’s why this will be something only the talking head elites do to create controversy. If it ever became reality they GOP-E would be forced-yet again to face the reality that the average American hates their guts.

Is this a joke? The last time a sitting president failed to win the nomination of his party was in 1880, when the Republicans dumped Rutherford B. Hayes. And the electoral process didn’t have primaries in those days; meetings in smoke-filled rooms usually decided who the candidate would be.

Romney had his shot in 12, and he completely botched a winnable election... Slinks back to UTAH and carpetbags into senate on the Mormon solidarity vote... to basically just be the mouthpiece for the GOPe....

There is a half-billion dollars on the sidelines from guys who are fed up with Trump,”

How many votes do they actually think that will buy them? A million? Two?

Last time, $130 million bought them four delegates. That was before Trump taught *us* how to win.
